Reviews of Toshiba 47ZV650U from Amazon.com

Great Looking TV

I have wanted to get an HD TV for a while. I spent a weekend looking for one and saw this at a local store. I compared it to Sony, Samsung, LG and others and thought it had the best picture. The colors are better - clearer and more true to life, and it's a lot less blurry than most TVs on the shelf. It provides a much clearer picture than regular or 120 TVs for less than true 240. Football, action movies and TV shows all look great. I don't know how it would compare side by side with a true 240, but I'm not worried. It was on Amazon for less than the one store I found that carried it, so I ordered it. And it's even cheaper now. The reviews I found online, such as CNET, were all favorable.

Delivery was free and took less than a week. Though the company Amazon had delivering it almost didn't deliver it. I waited the day it was to show up and it never came. I searched my order for delivery company info, Googled them and called the local office. They had a driver bring it out at about 7pm, but if I hadn't called, it would have been a few more days. That is the first problem with Amazon shipping I have ever had, but the first time it has not been USPS/UPS.

The box isn't the cool, easy, lift off top. But since it isn't real heavy, unpacking wasn't too bad.

The TV is beautiful. The picture is great. I love the extra inputs. There are plenty for different connections. I can connect my laptop via HDMI and the picture quality is crystal clear. I had some problems with the remote at first, but I think it was just getting used to how it worked. What functions were active on what menu or setting.

I also purchased an LG Blu Ray home theater (LG LHB977) and they work great together. The LG has an extra HDMI input so my cable routes through it, simplifying the surround sound. And now that I have HD cable, I am more amazed at the picture quality. The Toshiba sound is great, but of course, not surround.

The TV supports plugging a USB device like an external hard drive into it and playing movies and videos from it. That function works very well. I have not tried using an SD card to view pictures.

I have had it for about 1 1/2 months and still love it. The LG Blu ray is pretty nice too. No complaints on it. Plus my wife likes the TV, so that is a great bonus. I love the TV and highly recommend it

Wonderful

I have it for a month or so. It looks and works great. Installation was super easy, colors are fine right out of box to me. We watched several blu ray movies and picture is breathtaking. So far I am very happy with purchase.

New flatscreen

We are very pleased with the Toshiba REGZA 47-inch LCD HDTV. It has a wonderful picture, great color, good size and is user friendly. Would recommend this product to anyone looking for an LCD HDTV.

Excellent TV but . . .

I agree with all the positive reviews here, but if you need to use closed captioning, you might want to read Freiwil's review of the 46-inch Regza at Toshiba REGZA 46XV645U 46-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Black He is correct in saying that you have to use the cable box's closed captioning option because CC is not transmitted through the HDMI cable. I called Toshiba to confirm this, and the rep said this is true. I really hate that because the TV has many CC options for font, size, and so on that are not available via cable TV. Also, others have mentioned a set-up issue (the set-up screen occurring every time you turn on the TV) on sets built before a certain date. The Toshiba rep admitted this is a problem, but she mailed a card to insert in one of the slots on the side to update the firmware and avoid this problem in the future. For the price, this is an excellent buy. The technician who set up our TV said that he thought the Sanyo top-of-the-line had gotten around the problem with CC. I hope Toshiba can do that! However, the higher end Sanyo we priced was $1000 more than the Toshiba.

First-rate for less!

I've had mine for about a month now and can't get home quick enough to watch it every day. Compare it side-by-side with mid-level Samsungs and Sonys, and you'll have to agree the picture is every bit their equal, and it costs hundreds less. I'm kinda picky and have never had a TV that I could leave in "Automatic" picture mode before, but I do now. Reflections from the glossy screen are not bad at all in my living room, the sound is better than in my other LCD TVs, and recent versions of the firmware have eliminated the setup nag at turn-on (mine, built in May 2009, does not have the issue.) I'm not saying it is the best TV out there, but if you give it a fair look you may just take one home. Toshiba has become serious about playing with the big boys in LCD TV, that's for sure.

Top Quality; Great Value

I have been using this item for 3 months with no problems what-so-ever. The delivery was free, and the company unpacked the Television, hooked up the antenna wire input, checked the operation, picture quality and guided me through the setup and use of the remote. All packaging was removed from my house.
This unit replaced a 51 inch projection console.
I do not have cable or satellite, but the tuner picked up all local channels and a couple that were not being picked up with the set top box I was using. I receive signals via a roof-top antenna.
The picture quality is outstanding with the factory settings. There are several options for viewing: default, sports, movie, etc. Each option allows custom settings for picture quality. I used the Spears & Munsil, High Definition Benchmark, Blu-ray Edition, to set the custom settings for each viewing option. There was very little deviation needed from the factory settings. I was truely impressed.
While watching high action, fast motion, content, there is no detectable blurring, shadows or artifacts; at least by my standards. There is an ambient light detection system that helps adjust picture brightness according to room light.
I do not use the on-board speakers, therefore, I cannot attest to their quality. I do use the TOS link out to my receiver and find that the transferred signal quality is very good.
The TV is used for over-the-air broadcast reception via roof-top antenna; a standard, upconverting, DVD player via HDMI; a Blu-ray player, with wireless network access, via HDMI; and a Wii video game console via component cables. There are plenty of other inputs available for any future additions.
The only downside to the unit is the size of the frame: 2.5 inches on the sides and 3.25 inches on the top and bottom. It is plastic infused with a modern design that fades from black to clear, but it may somewhat limit where you wall-mount the set.

Bottom Line: I highly recommend this HDTV to anyone interested in excellent picture quality and value.

Forget the Samsung

Toshiba is just not getting the publicity that Samsung is, and of course not the sales either, but they arent trying to flood the market either. We bought this TV after purchasing a smaller version for my Semi truck. The picture was so clear we had to get another one. This time we went from 26" to 47", but we are still amazed at the clarity. The setup couldn't be easier. We got the direct TV and surround sound hooked up in minutes and then ordered a BluRay to go with it, Very simple hook ups with the HDMI plugs (3). My only complaint would be the speakers in the back making the sound slightly muffled, but with the surround on, it doesnt matter. A great deal and great TV.

2nd Toshiba

Took delivery from Amazon 12/11/09. This TV is an upgrade from a 42HL167 which we moved to bedroom. It's our largest purchase from Amazon and all went as planned. Delivery guy unpacked it and plugged it in and we saw the setup screen and then shut it down as it was cold and we let it sit for 24 hrs before setup was started. The actual setup took about 90 minutes which included the move of the 42 TV to bedroom and setup of the 47.

HD OTA picture quality is fantastic, PS3 Blu-Ray movies and gaming great. It's also hooked up to an HD A-35 player, a Yamaha YSP-800 Soundbar and Subwoofer, all good.

Our SD view is from Dish Network and a step up from the 42HL167 and we thought the 42 was a step up from our CRT TV.

Only problem was a sound reverb/distort that would occur once or twice a day. When this happened I would hit input and go to antenna out of dish and then immediately go back to Dish input and it was gone.

The Dish feed was setup TV/Dish/ES-25 recorder. I replaced the ES-25 recorder with a EZ-28 recorder These are Panasonic recorders. Evidently since I am now 2 days reverb/distort free, there was some type of conflict from the electronic Gods. With the constant upgrading of all units these conflicts do happen.

Love it

We researched HDTV for a few months before deciding on the Toshiba Regza, and felt like we'd done enough research to feel comfortable in the investment. What we didn't know was that you can't *just* buy an HDTV and be done with it like you could in the past--you have to get the HD satellite, replace your home theater system with a new compatible one, and get cables that cost 1/3 the price of the TV. And then there was the Ethernet ports, the router, the wall mount, and the kajillion other accessories that complete the package. So for HD newbies like us, consider yourself warned ;)

Another FYI: if you order this through Tiger Direct, the communication regarding shipping isn't great. They emailed and said they would contact me when the package had shipped, but they never did. After five days I called them myself and was told that it was sent through a freight company that would contact me to schedule the delivery. The company was great, and got my TV to my home quickly.

That said, this was SO worth it! The picture is beautiful, and everything the reviews said it would be. We weren't able to view it in person with the HD hook-up before buying, so we had to take the reviewers' word for it--pretty scary when you're plunking down $999! But the picture quality is UNREAL, and I have so many movies I want to re-watch on it now. Everything was easy to plug into the TV, and there were plenty of ports available. The owner's manual was really easy to follow, which is a huge bonus.

My only complaint (and this is my little nitpick) is with the aesthetics of the frame. To me, the pattern of the overlay and the silver texture underneath are unnecessary--I just want to watch TV, and would have preferred a simple black frame. I don't want to notice the frame when I watch, but I am with this. It's definitely not a deal-breaker, though

Great viewing!

This is a magnificent TV which was very easy to set up. The picture and sound are top quality and the remote and its features are user friendly. I highly recommend this Regza Toshiba as a "best buy"! This is an Amazon verified product.

BETTER THAN SETS COSTING MUCH MORE

I did a lot of research before making this purchase, looking at other Toshiba models as well as other brands and spec wise, this set had all the others beat hands down! This purchase has been a great experience from the purchase price to the free delivery and most importantly the performance of the set. The sound on this set was much better than expected and I should have rated that a five as well, because you can't expect theater sound from such small speakers. Everyone knows that you need to use a surround sound amp to experience theater like sound and still people harp on the sound of these sets (duh). I consider myself very particular when making such purchases and always try to strike a balance between cost vs quality. I believe this set is by far the best of the entry level 120hz/240 clear scan set out there and competes admirably with the full blown 240hz as well as led back lit sets. There have been some interesting somewhat negative reviews on this set, but honestly unless these folks received a lemon, I think they are simply suffering from buyers remorse and most likely would complain if hung with a new rope. Oh and lets not forget the reported lack of deep blacks on this set and other lower priced sets... well I can't speak for the others, but the blacks are just fine on this set so go ahead and spend $1,000 to $1,500 dollars more and see if you can tell the difference. And finally lest we forget the off angle viewing angle which is said to be poor unless you spend an additional $1,000 dollars... well I have gone from side to side until all I see is the back of the set and there is no loss in quality as long as you can see the screen. And last but not least glare on the shiny screen that Toshiba chose to use on this set. My viewing room has windows on three sides and yes there is some reflection on the screen from the windows at times and guess what?... I draw the drapes when watching a program that is in high definition so I get all the detail and the glossy screen adds contrast, but when watching the news who cares? I hope this helps sort through some of the reviews as some seem to rate the product a five just because it arrived and still others give poor ratings because they are in a bad mood I guess.

BUY A POWER FILTER!!!

First, Amazon and One Call have been great and I continue to buy from both.

FYI #1
If you buy ANY HD TV you need to get a good power filter/ surge protector!!! I didn't and found out 3 days after plugging my 47in Toshiba 240 clearscan in that I should have. We turned it off on the 3rd night and it wouldnt turn back on. After doing some research I found that most of the service calls techs make on these tv's are power supply replacements. The three days the tv worked it worked great though. Someone plugged a guitar amp in accross the room earlier that day and i think that it may have had something to do with it. I spoke with 2 techs in the area and both said it would be the power supply and that they are very touchy. They also said a stage one power filter/surge protector (power strip type) would be fine and that the old ones can get weak so buy a new one when you order your tv.

I didnt do a lot of warranty research when I bought the Toshiba so I'm not sure what the other brands are like but it's worth looking at the replacement part shipping times. Toshiba ships ground 3 to 7 day delivery. It's been almost 2 weeks and I have yet to see the tech w/ my new part.

Do your homework.
Keep your old tv (for a while).
Keep ALL boxs and packing for 2 or 3 months if you can.
AND..... BUY A NEW SURGE PROTECTOR!!!

At the moment I have a 98lb $1200 reminder that not doing my homework can still get me in trouble. lol

Happy Hunting :-)

very nice lcd

Bought this LCD couple weeks ago, ordered on a saturday had it by the following friday. Great picture quality, pretty good sound. I spent countless hours researching LCD's, went to several local retailers, and finally decided on this Toshiba. I have a Toshiba CRT and reallly liked it, so figured this one would be better and boy is it. I highly recommend this model for everyone. Price wise beats Samsung and Sony out of the park. The finish on this set is real sleek looking really draws you in. Not sure when I'm gonna leave my house now. Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U buy it you won't regret it.

Don't buy it from TigerDirect

The TV is what I expected with a great HD picture. Pretty easy to set up. I use a home theater so can't comment on the sound.

TigerDirect made buying this TV a miserable experience. Did not deliver on time. Would not help locate or resolve delivery problem. Be careful when you buy from a seller other than Amazon. I would never buy anything from TigerDirect.

kristak

Just wanted a TV with a great picture, sound and history. My last Toshiba lasted 15 years so hoped and figured it would be the most logical choice for me as far as brand. The 47" was exactly what I was looking for as I have a built in wall cabinet that could house only a certain size. Received and set it up promptly and was happy until we started hitting low tones. Vibration in the sound accompanied the lower tones in voices and music while watching our programs. Anyone else having this problem? Contacted Toshiba and they immediately got someone out to look at it - they said everything was alright and we should call our cable service. They came out said everything was alright. Everything is not alright!!!!! With all the other reviews I have read seems no one has had sound issues. I will probably order another one and take my chances.

Very Nice

We purchased this for our living room, man it is huge! I get compliments all the time from my guests. We have no glare issue with ours as some others have, also no audio probs or glitching (we have dishnetwork). Regza link is a very nice function, turn the power on to my ps3 and the tv automatically recognizes it and starts up...I hit one button and Im ready to play!
Does seem to attract dust but thats not a biggie,we use distilled water on a rag then wipe clean with a dry one. Lagoon design does have almost 3D effect border making the tv pop out or for some "sunk into the wall",really neat look overall. We ordered our's through bing/tigerdirect for the cashback which saved us a total of almost $40 after shipping. Was delivered by a company Ive never heard of before, the driver had to drive 2 1/2 hours to my address in which he got lost and had to reschedule delivery. Weird shipping service is the only thing about my order I didnt care too much about,TV box had a huge forklift gouge in bottom of box...I immediately opened and examined that it missed the bottom of Tv by inches..but didnt damage it!luckily. We love our tv very much,it is far superior than any Ive seen on the shelves in the local stores by price and features hands down. 240hz,100,000 ratio,4hdmi ports,sd card slot (pics),usb slot for Divx,1/2 mute is beautiful for when you get a non important interruptions or simply hit it twice to completely mute it if the boss calls =) (i mean the wife btw)
We enjoy bioshock 1,2,Final fantasy all on 1080p hd. Do your homework,we did and I promise you when you compare the hardware of other units to this toshiba series...you will be right back here, even the smaller 42" units are the steal for their size class. I still have yet to see a deal that beats what amazon and tigerdirect have here, bravo you two!

Could not be more pleased.

After much research(in stores & online)I ordered the Toshiba. This had all the features and abilities to add options that I should ever need. Delivery was 1 day later than promised but given we were in midst of a most rare "blizzard" for our part of the world, I can't complain. The delivery guys helped unpack and check for any damage. (there was none). The back panel is very clear and quite easy to hook up. Love that most connections are on the right hand side so that it swivels out for easy and visible connectivity. Rich color, deep blacks and beautiful picture were gotten with the auto setup. Recommend highly after about 21 days.

Excellent HD Quality

After months of research (retailers, internet and word of mouth from other LCD owners) and after reading various reviews for top HD LCD's, I chose the Toshiba 47ZV65OU and am very satisfied to say the least. The picture quality is superb and I have not had any problems with the sound. I connected my tv to an off the shelf HD antenna and was blown away by how crisp and sharp the picture quality is- matter of fact I opt to watch local channels via the antenna instead of through the satellite provider. The many input choices gives me the opportunity to have Satellite service, local HD channels, a DVD recorder, blu-ray player and pc monitor options all with just the click of the input button. And the input selection change is just as smooth and quick as changing from one channel to another. You can pay more, but for my money- less than a grand, this LCD is on par with the more expensive sets I've researched.

toshiba

great tv. looks fantastic in living room. Easy to use, and awesome picture.

Excellent TV, but sound is a little buzzy on occasion

We bought this TV because the model groups was rated high by Consumer Reports and we are very happy with it except that every now and then we hear a buzz coming from the speakers just under whatever other sound is supposed to be coming out.

Toshiba REGZA 47ZV650U 47-Inch: Awesome is the word

Purchased this beauty from my local Costco store for 900 a month back, was easy to set-up and I am fully satisfied with the picture quality and its appearance. Had done lot of market research before making the purchase, and this lcd is the best buy for the buck. The only area of disappointment is the sound quality, which cracks at higher volumes. But this should not be a worry if you have a home theater or external speakers.

Tried out the USB to play movies (divx and avi format), and view pictures from a memory stick, and it works just fine.

Wish it had an Ethernet port, but brought a samsung blu-ray player with internet tv to compensates it. Connected it via HDMI port and the video experience is phenomenal. Also works great as an extended monitor for my laptop. Have not tried a gaming console yet.

Pros:
-Picture Quality
-Easy Set-up
-Light Weight
-Responsive Remote
-Glossy Screen

Cons:
-Sound
-No Ethernet port

Overall, very satisfied and would recommend it.
(March 30, 2010)

The picture

I also have a Sony Bravia 46". The picture quality of the Toshiba can't compare. It's disappointing, but tolerable. If you don't have another TV to compare it to, you'd never even realize that the quality of the picture was poor.
(March 31, 2010)

Great Picture & Options with mediocre audio

This is my first HDTV and glad with the purchase, also glad I waited all this time to get one (cheaper prices, more options). Some reviews & people complain the blacks are not black enough, but I'm not an HD snob, so the picture looks great to me and the colors are bright and clear. Coming from a 36" standard TV I am very pleased with this, making the little 13" standard in my bedroom look old and needing to be replaced by a 22" HDTV. Watching sports (basketball only for now) looks good, no blurring or negative imagery - great detail and refresh rate works nicely. This has a lot of a lot of good options in the back: connected it to my stereo and at the same time plug in my computer to play movies from there. Really like that I can connect multiple audio/video/PC devices at the same time and easily switch from one to another.

My ONLY COMPLAINT so far - the internal speakers are pretty cheap and would sound 'tinny' or as if they were going to bust when the volume was turned up higher. To fix that I connected my stereo receiver and speakers and muted the TV audio - now it sounds great with stereo sound.

Delivery was also good; the two gentleman were friendly, connected it to make sure it worked properly then left - didn't take a long time.

:take care.
