Reviews of Toshiba 42ZV650U from Amazon.com
Great value - awesome features for less than a grand
I swore based on many online and magazine ratings to only purchase either a Sony or Samsung LCD TV (same manufacturing anyways). I never really considered the Toshiba Regza line until I saw it on display at an architectural exhibit. The colors and detail were absolutely stunning. Despite what CNET described as not that good, the darks were actually really visible and even more so because Toshiba added a more detailed color tweaking menu for the videophiles out there. The menu is VERY simple to understand - and my particular favorite navigation part is the ability to switch inputs so quickly using the left/right toggle buttons.
The sound quality is amazing. There are many built in options here as well. Dolby sound, surround, etc. The speakers are so well hidden and yet sound great.
Other features I love are all the HDMI inputs, an SD Card slot (we can watch slide shows from people's cameras), and the USB port (WOW you can watch DIVX movies, listen to MP3s etc from an external drive!!!)
I haven't really given the Clearscan 240 feature a chance yet because I'm waiting for the football games on sunday, but I'm very happy so far with the 120Hz smooth performance. Again, excellent value for all the features you get.

Very nice
This is a great tv. It was a snap to connect. My mom liked it, so she bought one too.

Black Border !
I have had this TV for a few weeks now. It is the first LCD-TV that I bought. I am very happy with it. I connected it to one of my PC which I am using it right now to write this review as a PC-monitor. The resolution is great. I added a Blu-Ray internal drive for less than $60 (player software included) to this PC and have been watching Blu-Ray movie with this set up. The pictures were stunning clear and beautiful on many of the movies.
In the beginning... there is a black border around the picture. For a while I did not know what to do. I notice that there are a few selections for the picture size: full, theater wide 1-3, 4:3 and native. Native gives the best resolution but with the black border while theater wide would cut off the picture but use all the screen. My PC equip with an ATI graphic adapter and the following was what I did to resolve the black border issue. If you have a different graphic adapter, there may be a similar solution.
Open Catalyst Control Center(CCC)
Go to desktops & displays
Right click on the small monitor icon on the bottom left corner
Choose configure.
Note: CCC showed that this TOSHIBA REGZA 42ZV650U reported a maximum refresh rate of 75Hz, which is the best that I seen on a LCD flat panel. There are many setting here, but do not apply any setting that your monitor do not support.
Select HDTV Support tab, and check the box that show the Correct Display Format that your LCD support. Click on apply after everything is set.
Other information: Vista 64, Catalyst Version 9.8, ATI Radeon HD 3870, DVI-HDMI cable, and this TOSHIBA REGZA 42ZV650U.

Great TV
I ended up buying this tv at Best Buy (they matched the price that Amazon provided) 2 months ago. The image quality is great!
I am a bit confused, I thought that the Xbox 360 was not able to produce 1080p resolution (I have the white one with component connections), but the tv says otherwise?
The only other issue was with the sound(why it only rates 4 stars from me). When I first bought the TV I was using its speakers. After an hour of playing a Blu-ray movie the sound would sometimes start freaking out on me. I would start hearing echoes and robotic type noises that got progressively worse. When I would turn the TV off the Blu-Ray player would also turn off so i would have to wait 3-5min before resuming my movie. After rebooting, everything was fine. Once I hooked up the surround sound system I have never had any problems.
Once reading the manuel, I learned that the Toshiba logo can also be turned off, it got annoying sometimes during films.
Beware surround sound users, some receivers downgrade the image quality. You will also need to buy another HDMI cable (Blu-Ray player to receiver, then the other cable from the receiver to the tv) and make sure they will support 240hz!

fantastic tv
This is a fantastic tv. The picture is sharp, the remote does everything, and the price is right. The clarity is amazing. If the frame were not there, you would think you were looking at live action.

Good size and value
The Good: I bought this TV set after much research and viewing every set I could online and at the stores. This set beat out Samsung and Sony models in its class, and was hundreds less. This set has great audio speakers that adjust to loud volumes such as commercials. Black levels are great. Colors pop. Skin tones are spot on. This set is more "tweakable" than others. You can elect to have antiblurring without dejudder. I looked side by side at several stores to compare this model and it is superior to Sony and Samsung pq. Bigger is better. I don't have room for a 46 inch and this 42 inch beats out the 40 inch sets.
The Bad: I was unlucky and my set had two dead pixels right out of the box. After two months, I got a second set, exact same model. The second set had audio lip syncing problems on one channel and buzzing sounds once a day. The dead pixel set had no audio problems. I ended up keeping the dead pixel set. The fine print under the Toshiba warranty says if you get one dead pixel or 100 dead pixels, it is not covered under the warranty. I can't see my dead pixels unless there is a white background and I look for them. This set is perfect in many ways, except not pixel perfect.
It was a bad experience to start out with, to have two sets, the same model with problems.

REGZA 42Z650U
First, I have had this product for a short time and have used it only a few hours, so will not be able to give it what I would call an honest review. That will be in a year or more. So far It has been as advertised having a great picture and good sound. I like the fact that the volume stays about the same when commercials come on. This set is used via air antenna. I have not yet learned how to delete channels I am not interested in so that the set does not try to lock onto them when scanning. I have much to learn.

LCD TV
The Toshiba 42 inch TV works very well. It got top ratings from Consumers Reports and lives up to its performance. The shipping from Amazon was fast and it arrived in very good shape.

Very Good Value, met my performance expections
I read a ton of reviews and looked at the Toshiba picture in a store before choosing it. The volume control of commercials works really well, and the standard resolution upconvert seems very good. For the money, I think the display and feature quality beat out Samsung.

Awesome! Looks great, best HDTV I've seen
This Toshiba is great. The images on it look like they are in 3d. Has great contrast (black/white) and the color display is amazing. Turning off the Toshiba sign was a must, but easy to do. Easy navigation screens, very intuitive. Fast shipping, item arrived in good condition. Overall, I highly recommend this product.

Nice picture, but it reflects way too much light
I spent a lot of time researching TVs, but apparently, not enough:) Overall, I like this TV. The picture is great. However, the screen reflects way too much light. When the TV is off, or in dark scenes, it looks like a mirror. We got this set because it's supposed to have a good viewing angle, which was a concern I had. It does have a good picture from a wide angle, although I believe many others do as well. There is so much glare, you'd think it was a plasma. Also, for some reason, many of the TVs I looked at including this one have a very high gloss frame. This also reflects a lot of light. I have no idea why they wouldn't use a flat black for the frame. It's really annoying that it reflects any light in the room. I don't use the TVs speakers, so no comment there. So bottom line, is that it's a nice picture, but there is a real glare problem if you have any light at all. My advice when you're looking at them in the store, is to turn the TV off, and see how much glare there is.

Happy with the purchase
So far TV is really good, with nice picture quality and surround sound feature is effectively good. Don't need to change volume now between show and commercials, which is really good as you can hear the dialogs really well. Picture quality is good but not very sharp colors. Well I haven't played much with color adjustments though, that's why I didn't give it 5 on picture quality. I may update this comment once I play with picture settings more.

Stunner and outstanding value for the money
Paid $799 with no shipping through Amazon. Great deal, great TV, buy it and enjoy it. My only 4 star is about sound, but candidly I didn't really give it a tryout. Runs through an audio system.

Toshiba, the Honda Accord of Electronics
I was a Sony customer for years. Great products and customer service but I always paid a high premium for the name. Years ago, Consumer Reports switched me to Toshiba. I am happier than I was with Sony for WAY less money and for WAY more features. I really don't know what you would want from a TV more than I get from my Toshiba42ZV65OU except for a better PC connect option without having to buy a 50.00 converter box. Couldn't be happier for 749.99. If I had room for the 47" I would have bought that. Extended warranty, www.squaretrade.com.
Thanks again Toshiba. Now please get over yourselves and make some some quality blue rays so I only have to use one remote!

Great LCD TV
TV was delivered in a timely fashion and set up was a breeze. I have nothing bad to say about this LCD TV. Picture quality is very good and the Dolby volume technology that all but eliminates the volume differences between tv shows and commercials is a great feature.
(January 26, 2010)
Disappointment.
We returned this product because the sound quality was bad and the picture was not as clear as our old 32" Sony Bravia. The Toshiba claims to be Full HD 1080p, the Sony is not Full HD, it is 720p, but has a much better definition than the Toshiba. Also, the black items look a dark grey. It is not what we expected. It had a good rating in Consumer Reports, but it was not one of the recommended sets.

Very happy
We bought this TV on line and it's really the best TV for the price. At the beginning, I struggled to make the VGA display to work at 1280x1024 like we did on the older Toshiba HDTVs. After talking with Toshiba and trying out the HDMI output with 1080p output, though VGA works fine, we decided to upgrade our PC to HDMI and also get a HD PC monitor to work with this TV. It's really the best buy at this moment of beautiful life.

Wow Factor
We bought the Toshiba 42ZV650U from Amazon sold through J&R Music for a low low price of $759 delivered. We ordered on Tuesday morning and was delivered on Friday the same week. I wasn't expecting a high quality TV at this price, but after un-boxing and setting up the Wow Factor set in. This TV simply has an amazing picture quality. The sound is perfect for our bedroom. My wife even said we should buy the 55" model for our living room. Can't do that because we have a beautiful Mitsubishi WS-65813 there now, which NO TV can beat the picture quality that we've had for more than 5 years now. However if it goes completely out and can not be repaired I'd would pull the trigger on the 55" model as a replacement. I hooked up a Apple Mac Mini as a bedroom media server to this TV via HDMI and it looks wonderful. (NOTE when hooking up a Mini to the TV via HDMI change the Screen Mode to NATIVE to fit the screen.) If you decide to purchase this TV do not hesitate because the quality that your looking for in a $2K TV is in the lower priced Toshiba ZV650U series. Enjoy!

No usability complaints - would like to turn off the backlit TOSHIBA signature on front of the device. I don't do free advertizing.

Great TV for price paid
Got this TV at a bargain price ($740) through 6th Avenue Electronics (through Amazon). Just received the TV and have been watching movies and sports on it. The picture quality is great. This is the first LCD that I have purchased. I used to have a 52" Magnavox (DLP), but the color wheel crapped out on me (after 3 years). I figured going with a smaller TV (for our future bedroom) would be the way to go.
So far, the picture quality is great. I have used the Wii and Xbox 360 with the TV. The picture is alright for both gaming systems, but not excellent. The HDTV aspect (through DirecTV) has been fantastic. Sports look fantastic (specifically hockey) on the TV. Am excited to watch the Super Bowl on the new TV. No negatives so far.

Couldn't have asked for anything better... especially for the price. Had it out of the box and watching TV within a half hour.

Very, very Nice.
Let me be the first to say that I am not a techie. I am not an HDTV expert. I am a value-conscience consumer who was looking for a 42" HDTV for my living room.
I was looking for at least 120Mhz, 3 HDMI connections, a TV that could hold its own in a well-lit room, and something that was easy to configure.
After researching TVs for days on end, I had narrowed it down to a Samsung, LG and Toshiba. I then happened to have a hotel stay in a room with a 42" LG HDTV -- I was far from impressed, so I crossed that one off of the list. When I came across a listing for the Toshiba Regza through Amazon.com for $799, I decided to pull the trigger.
I have been impressed so far. Set up was a breeze and the user menu options are intuitive enough that I was able to play around with the settings to get a picture that I am happy with. The thing I notice most is that the colors just jump out at you (I have a 32" Vizio HDTV previously). For the first few days, it was somewhat disorienting how crisp and clear the picture was. Watching any HDTV footage - sports, movies, anything, it has been a great picture.
Its not a true 240hz, but rather 120hz coupled with Toshiba's proprietary "MotionFlow" technology. I have seen no lag time in the picture, no interference, no clutter in the picture.
All in all, I am a satisfied customer.

Awsome Set, spoiled by bleeding!
After talking with some very informed people, reading dozens of reviews, and watching prices like a hawk i purchased this set on 2/19/10. Amazingly it arrived the following monday and was hand delivered right into my home. Set up was a breeze i love the menu and connections and the aesthetics are impressive. However, in the lower left hand corner of the set there is huge backlight bleeding. It is so bad that blacks and deeper blues look gray. Even after turning the back light all the way down the problem remained. After going back and rereading many of the reviews and NOT finding this issue i can only assume this is a defect. Needless to say amazon is getting a call ASAP. :(

PROS:GREAT TV FOR THE PRICE.
EXCELLENT CONECTIVITY OPTIONS AND PICTURE QUALITY.
SOUND IS VERY GOOD FOR ENCLOSURE SIZE.
GREAT COLOR REPRODUCTION.
CRISP PICTURE DISPLAY.
GREAT PC DISPLAY.(DISPLAY SIZE VARIES)
GOOD QAM TUNER.
WEIGHT OF TV.
CONS: SOFT PLASTIC(A BIT WEAK CONSTRUCION QUALITY BUT THEN AGAIN HARDER DENSER PLASTIC MEANS EXTRA WEIGHT THEREFORE IT COULD BE A PRO OR CON. YOU DECIDE)
AQUIRING COLOR PREFERENCE MIGHT BE A BIT TEDIOUS BECAUSE OF ALL OF THE DIFFERENT COLOR OPTIONS(IF YOU ARE A PERFECTIONIST THIS MIGHT BE A PRO)
THE 240 HZ MOTION DOES NOT REALLY ADD OR TAKE AWAY ANYTHING EXTREMELY NOTICEABLE.
OVERALL THE TV IS A GREAT BARGAIN AND HAS MANY OTHER TECHNOLOGY FEATURES THAT ONE MIGHT LOVE TO USE OR SIMPLY TURN OFF. GOOD LUCK DECIDING..

Extremely pleased
Let's get the cons out of the way: if you're closer than about 3 feet, the backlight shines through, and blacks, in general, are quite bright.
The pros: Wow--everything else is excellent. I had to send back a Philips LCD TV because standard definition TV looked just wrong, I couldn't play Wii games on it, and there was a lot of pixelation around fast moving objects when in 120 Hz mode. With this Toshiba, even standard TV look _excellent_: exactly the way I expect it to look. It has a games mode so that I can play Wii games (and esp. Rockband). It brings a certain smoothness to movement, but there has been _no_ pixelation whatsoever. I like the remote, the advanced color controls are excellent, my computer looks great on on it--I am so pleased with this TV. It has a swivel stand, which is important to me because I have to swivel it within my TV cabinet to get to the side connections. My Wii games look excellent in widescreen mode (if you use a component cable--not the standard composite cable!). This TV was a great price, too. Well done Toshiba.

Great TV for the price
I've owned this TV for over a year and it's been an absolute delight. My husband does a lot of gaming and needed a TV that was clear from all angles and was fast enough to keep up with his PS3. This TV does just that. I appreciate that it's easy to use and has so many places to plug things in so that I don't have to plug in the DVD player when I want to watch a movie. Sounds like some people's biggest complaint is the look of the casing, but I don't mind it. I think it looks rather sleek in my living room. All in all I think we did alright for our money, especially considering that we bought when you couldn't get a 42" Samsung under $1000 and we bought this TV for just below that.

Terrific Experience
This really is a lot of TV for the money. Great picture, great sound, lots of options. The only thing that I was hesitant on was ordering it through an online retailer. The experience with Amazon was great! I got free Super Saver shipping, and the delivery person called on the estimated day of delivery to set up a time. He brought the TV in, unpacked everything, set it up, connected it and verified that both the picture and audio were working, then he cleaned everything up and we were left with a brand new TV! I had no idea I would get such complete service for a few hundred dollars less than the local stores (who would not have gone to the same extent with delivery.) All in all, a terrific experience! Once again, Amazon went above and beyond my expectations!

Great buy!
Extremely nice television, we are very pleased with our purchase. The only little itsy bitty problem is that there is glare from windows and such. It's not that big of deal, everything else is just plain excellent. I am a very happy customer!

Toshiba 2010
My new 42" Toshiba HDTV is the perfect size for our room and cabinet. I had bought last year a 47" 2009 Toshiba from Best Buy for a larger room. The 42" is better in some ways but one problem is that it reflects glare much more than the older model. I paid so little for the new model it was too good to pass up. Thanks Amazon! You saved me at least $400 over BB. I set it up all by myself and I am definitely low tech.
Also I was a little concerned with shipping and delivery because the TV was a birthday present. Well it came 2-3 days early, in perfect condition, was lightweight enough for me to move it without help, and really easy to set up. A really good experience!

Toshiba REGZA 42z650
Delivery was as scheduled to our place in PA. Brought inside, set up and they waited until sure I was getting signal. For the price it will be difficult to beat this set. 240 hz. Picture was excellent and all I have it hooked up to is basic cable service provided by the Condo assn. Several stations already transmitted in HD so don't think we will subscribe for upgraded service since we are only there about 2-3 months out of the year. Audio was adequate, but I'm sure would be better with separate sound system. We use it for news and sports mostly so not a big deal. The one thing we particularly like is that it swivels on the base so can adjust for everyone to see depending on where they are sitting.

Absolutely awesome for the money
This our first LCD TV. After about a year of research and decision making we chose one that was rated excellent not only by other buyers but by consumer reports magazine. We are super pleased with this TV. We have HD programing with DishNetwork and the colors, clarity and options are more then we thought! You have to see this TV! Compared to what I have seen with others this is superior in quality!

Very good midrange lcd
This is my second Toshiba 42 inch LCD. The first one was a refurb and it didn't last that long. However, the picture was terrific! Now for this model. I like this tv in every way except one.... The reflective glare on the screen is pretty annoying. The older model didn't have this kind of screen and I loved it. That said, I think this tv is a great lcd for the money! Great picture with great sound for well under a grand! Can't beat it. I would recommend this buy to anyone who doesn't have a lot of money to spend and still demands a great product.

Very good value for your money.
I've been researching and saving for this TV for a long time. This TV by far was the best value for my money. I've looked at LG, Samsung, Sony, and a few others. I must say that so far I have found nothing to say that is bad about the Toshiba. If anything that I've learned so far is that all of the big name brand flat screens are the same. It really boils down to how much money you are willing to spend for the TV. I haven't been able to really play with the color settings yet and haven't been able to fully use the 1080p settings yet. DirecTV has screwed up my service since moving and they haven't solved the problem since I'm paying for HD service and I'm not getting it. I've got a feeling that I'm going to dump DirecTV when my contract is up with them and get a package deal from Verizon since I've got FiOS internet at my house. The only time that I've use the 1080p setting is on my Xbox 360 and so far it has a better picture on my TV then my Brother-in-laws HDTV. Overall, it's a great TV that I haven't regretting purchasing.

Exceeded all expectations, Picture is exceptional. I own 2 Toshiba TVs and they are both excellent quality in all areas.

I love it!
I've seen posts about bad glare, bad viewing angle, and non-swiveling base, all of which are not true. This tv has excellent sound, as well as oodles of connections. I especially love the media connections; watching movies and listening to music on a flash drive has never been easier. It's really a great tv!!

Good Tv!
I am very happy with this TV. Everything about it suggests quality. The Picture is great. This is a good product, and a good value.
