My 40" Flat Screen Television
I had been shopping all local stores for a good buy on a 40" flat screen Television. My son called me on the phone and told me of Amazon's listing of Toshiba 40 inch, 1080p, LCD, HDTV for about $100 less than advertised local televisions and with shipping and tax free. WOW! A great savings! Thanks Amazon!

Nice for the price...
I needed a TV that would fit a 41w x 30h space in my living room, so this Toshiba was almost perfect in that respect.
The TV is nice looking, if a little glossy with the piano black finish. In normal to dim lighting, there's no appreciable reflections, so not a big deal. The sound is merely OK. Expected that, so I connected a digital optical cable from the TV to my Denon receiver; problem solved.
Setup was trivial. Out of the box to watching Monday Night Football in 15 minutes. The Dynamic Contrast under Advanced Settings should be OFF. It's annoying when enabled, which is the default. I changed the Color Temp from Medium to Warm in Standard Mode as well and got a fairly accurate result.
My connected devices area an HD satellite box, an HD TiVO DVR, a DVD player/recorder, and the Denon 3805. The TiVO is getting signal from a Terk HD antenna mounted on the roof. The sat box and TiVO are connected HDMI; the DVD box is component.
So far, I get an excellent HD picture with DirecTV and TiVO. 1080p and 1080i output settings, respectively. With SD programs, and with the DVD at 480p, there's clearly an issue. The picture is soft and a little noisy. The TiVO does a slightly better job; the picture is sharper and the noise is definitely less. This could be a difference in the video scaler chipsets used in the two HD units. HD programs are slightly dimmer with the TiVO as compared to the DirecTV unit.
Right now, I plan to burn the set in for 40-50 hours, then go for a precise calibration using Home Theatre Setup. If I can't get close with that, I think I can borrow a Spyder.
All in all, the set is pretty good. Since we watch more HD programming than SD programming, the SD picture quality isn't an issue. It might be for you. I'll also note that the TV profile for Harmony remotes is good for this model. My first setup of Devices and Activities worked fine for my Harmony 670. The included Toshiba remote is nothing to write home about. No backlight, mushy buttons...average at best.
The bottom line is that this set was $150-200 cheaper than a comparable Sony and looks great with HD programming.

Excellent TV, good price
I recently purchased this TV from another source (I would have bought it here on Amazon but I got a better financing deal through a chain store's website, not BB).
I actually purchased this one and the 32" model. We are moving and I needed a larger HDTV for my living room to replace a 32" Olevea. I also own a Sony 46" so please don't think I am just doing my comparison to the Olevea. This Toshiba 40" unit is great. First of all, space wise, it takes up little footprint aside from the actual screen space. Some TV's have a huge area to the left and right for speakers or just by design that don't allow for such a fantastic screen size in such a small fitting. My cabinet just barely fits this TV with about a half inch max to spare on either side, which is exactly what I wanted. So I have hooked it up with DirecTV, Xbox360, PS3, and an HD-DVD player and it looks fantastic on everything. What I noticed was the blacks are black first of all. So often you don't really get black, you get a hazy gray. But this is black where black is on the screen. Everything is sharp and fantastic.
I am a guy who watches the news all day while working and grinds away at videogames in my free time. So I stare at screens a lot, and this one is a winner. I tested it with PS3's Killzone and WOW! I also played a couple hours of Fallout3 Mothership Zeta and it looked significantly better than play earlier in the day on the Olevea (or play in the other room on the Sony 46") Unfortunately, this one is going to end up in my living room and not the office area where I work when I move, so I wont be using it as much as the Sony (which is finding its way into the office/den). But when I play the PS3, wii, 360, or watch an HD-DVD, bluray, or upscaled DVD, along with DirecTV HD programming and FIOS HD programming as soon as I can get it again (I'm moving out of FIOS territory and it won't be available there until Jan 2010), I am in for a real treat. Family night will never look so good!

Excellent All Around HDTV for Entry Level Consumers
Purchased this TV for $600. It was the best high dollar value purchase I made in quite some time. Although it is my family's first HDTV, the quality and value of it cannot be denied. As others have pointed out, the colors on the TV gravitate towards the warm/red side, but is easily remedied by the easy to use menu picture settings. One excellent feature of this tv is its Clear QAM tuner, while a standard on most LCDs these days, this particular QAM tuner worked quite well with my area's cable service. The channels are crisp and clear without having to pay for an extra HD service plan. This works out great since I can live with watching HD network channels and use my PS3 for movies etc.
To sum the whole experience up: Once we unpacked and set it up (easily), we were all converted to the HD era. Now we are looking to purchase another larger screen to replace our existing 15 year old 60" projection tv.

Bargain!
The Toshiba 40RV525R is an incredible deal for $619! Let me start by saying this: If you buy an HD television, for cripes sake, you MUST subscribe to an HD service!!! What kind of picture would you expect from any other broadcasting? We're talking 1080p here, folks. If you don't want to shell-out for HD service, then buy a old style CRT (tube) television set! There are plenty around, still. With Direct TV's HD service I have a fantastic picture! I will say that this model's sound is less than what I expected. It does not sound like HD to me. My only other complaint is that the remote control will not turn both the TV and the satellite receiver off with one click. But I love the set, and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

Great TV, but I will never buy a Toshiba TV again
After purchasing this TV, I bought a Phillips upconverting DVD player. The DVD player worked fine with the composite connections, but would not work with HDMI (so no 1080p). As I'm new to HDMI connections, I spent (literally) months researching the problem, purchased 3 different HDMI cables, went on numerous online forums, paid some online service to address the problem (with no results), and still I could not get the HDMI connection to work (and I tried all 3 HDMI ports). I tried the DVD player on another TV; it worked perfectly as soon as I plugged it in. Then I tried another DVD player (a Sony) that worked on this other TV. I hooked up the HMDI connection to my Toshiba TV, and it would not work either. For both DVD players, I would get flashes of picture or some sound, but it would never work. I've since come to the conclusion that this TV does not want to work with HDMI devices. I have not tried a Toshiba DVD player with an HDMI connection, so that might work. But the level of frustration (even now, months later) causes me to discourage you from buying a Toshiba TV. But, other than this problem, I like the TV (hence the 2 stars).

Great HDTV
I am 100% satisfied with everything, from the delivery to the setup.
The picture quality can't be beat and the sound quality I was very surprised to be very good.
I will be setting up a blu-ray in the near future

Knocks My Socks Off
I first bought a 32" Visio for $450. It had periodic flicker problems and I wasn't all that impressed with the picture or the quality or variety of the inputs anyway. I took it back to the store and got this one for $599.99. It works great with DirecTV and my year-old, low-end, Samsung, 1080P DVD player. The picture is fantastic. Even a standard picture looks good. I liked the color right out of the box and made no changes. To me, this TV says quality, the Visio didn't.

Quality for Low Price
Overall its a great HDTV at a surprisingly low price, do not let the brand name of Toshiba fool you, it is a very good tv.
Pros: Good black level with little backlight bleeding, lively colors, good image quality and virtually no visually noticeable lag while watching 720p broadcasts of hockey games even as a 60hz TV. Bezel is nice and simple, could have been a little thinner.
Cons: None really, the glossy bezel is a dust and finger print magnet though.
Other: As with every other tv on the market, the factory calibration is garbage, just do a little research online and you shall find several configurations to make the colors correct. As mentioned before, the speakers are a little lacking, but not by much. Buying a 40" HDTV speakers should be the least of anyone's worry, as they should be combined with a home theater system for sound. Most importantly, watching movies and sports on this Toshiba from 8-10' away, the picture is almost flawless.

Great TV, great deal!!
I'll start with saying that this is my first LCD TV, I already had a 29" 720p Samsung HDTV Slim fit tube TV and is still going. But the 40" looks awsome in my living room, I got this TV for a great deal, it has 1080p and has great sound unlike other LCD TV sets, I have it hooked up to a small 2.1 system for when watching games or a movie, but for regulat TV watching the speakers are just fine, I haven't tried a bluray movie on it as I'm still waiting for my Bluray laptopSony VAIO VGN-NW270F/S 15.5-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) to arrive. The only feature I don't like about this is the Dynalight control, it keeps changing the brightness of the image depending of what you're watching, not sure who thought of this idea but the effect is awfull, fortunatelly this is an option you can disable. All things considered this is a great TV set at an affordable price, not sure if a few hundred dollars for all those fancy options would make a noticeable difference, I'm very happy with my purchase and would definately recommend to anyone looking for a 40" 1080p LCD TV, plus I trust that being a Toshiba set it will last, will update the review if anything goes wrong, I've had it for 2 months now.

Great product
This is a great product, for a great price. And as always, if you by from Amazon, there is never a problem at all.

new flat screen
one thing wrong with it, it is minor but bothersome, the input for sound from a PC doesn't work, and sending back this large item to get it fix is a hurdle for me, so when I'll need it I will have to buy wireless speakers to hook my laptop an extra unforeseen expense for me.

Great TV for the money
This TV works great! It's primarily used as a computer monitor and it's awesome. If you want to run the full 1920 x 1080 resolution you need to buy a DVI to HDMI cable or have some other way of interfacing directly with the HDMI input. However, the VGA input still looks great. I was able to run the VGA at 1440 x 900. As others have mentioned in their reviews the sound isn't as spectacular as the picture, but it's okay for regular TV viewing. I would recommend using a separate sound system. As mentioned above this is a great television for the money, and I'm very satisfied with the purchase.

If only the HDMI inputs worked!
I had HDMI working with my prior 42" flat screen, but I can't get HDMI to work on this TV with either my DISH TV cable box OR my DVD player. I use composite video inputs (which work ok), otherwise I'd return it and try something else. But, there are only two composite video inputs but three (useless for me) HDMI inputs. Other than that, I'm pretty happy with it.

very very happy oh by the way very happy
i had looked all over for a tv that had a reasonable price plus gave me a great picture. well i think i got what i was looking for. my only complaint is that i do not understand what s-video, hdmi, this kind of cable and that kind of cable is supposed to be used for, but i sat and read a little longer and figured it out. that really was no problem but i wanted to plug in and start watching right away. i think that for the price you will not do better or as good buying any other brand. i look at tv for pleasure not look at it for what it does not have. i plan on buying another one as soon as i move. they said it would be here between 3pm and 7pm well to my surprise it was delivered at 11am, just imagine ahead of delivery time. it does not get any better dealing with amazon and their delivery system.

Picture Perfect
The purchase the Toshiba HDTV has been a total delight for my husband! This was an easy way to shop and the results were superb. Each attibute about the TV is awesome; i.e., sound, appearance and especially the picture quality--you couldn't ask for a better product. I was particularly elated because the price was in line with my budget, as well as the delivery ease and set up. Thank you for making my shopping experience a joy!

Totally Pleased!
This is our second HDTV. I got spoiled watching HD in our bedroom, so the family room TV got changed out for an HDTV. Setup was amazingly easy. I think the sound quality is fine, but admittedly, I am not that fussy about sound. Recommend this TV highly. It is just what I wanted!

Great intro to the HD world
As an entry level TV this works rather well. Looks great with my 360, PS3, and makes a great PC monitor with a DVI-HDMI cable. If you are looking for an entry level HD TV that won't break the bank then this is the one. I could not be more pleased with the product.
