Reviews of Sony KDL-52XBR9 from Amazon.com

I can see clearly now!

Picture is bigger than my 46 inch SONY, but just as clear with even better color. With all the XBR features offered, it's a great bargain.

Sony Bravia Review

Great TV! Arrived in perfect condition and delivery was as we arranged. HD picture quality is great. So easy to hang on the wall that my wife and I were able to do it.

SONY NO BALONEY !!!

SONY NO BALONEY !!! if you remeber that line, you are showing your age. GREAT TV. Nice that it is 95% screen and not a lot of trim, Picture quality is great and it has so many geek gadgets.

Sony KDL 52XBRo 52 inch HDTV

Picture quality is excellent.Internet hookup works fine with a Linksys WET610N bridge. Hooked up to a Bose sound system, the whole experience is probably as good as it gets.

A top tier TV with gorgeous picture and plenty of sweet features.

This TV was a recent upgrade for me from my Toshiba 42LZ196. It was a 2 and a half yr old TV which is still good looking and still treated me well but seeing this TV at the display really convince me that the 2099 price tag was well worth it. There were several features that I was looking forward to, mainly the Motionflow 240Hz and the 3800:1 contrast ratio compared to my previous set. I was honestly pleasantly surprised by the myriad of features that this set is packed with.

First off, this 52 in beauty was a little bit thinner than my previous set. The number of connections for external devices was also great. 4 HDMI connectors and even several different inputs for additional devices. This works great for someone like me. I have a X360, PS3, and Wii, along with my cable box and there's still plenty of other connectors for other devices. I can even hook up a PC for anything else. Not only is this TV functional but operationally well designed as well. For PS3 owners, you'll notice that the main menu will resemble the XMB interface just like a PS3/PSP. Most features are easy to find and also customizable. There are plenty of features to excite advanced users, but it's still simple enough that most novices should be able to figure the main functions out. My only real issue was having problems connecting this TV to the internet. Unfortunately, my network was not DLNA compatible so I have not had the chance to try the advanced features like internet video and widgets. I'm hoping to find a work around soon. I wouldn't really penalize this TV for this because those features are just icing on the cake. Even without them, the TV still has plenty of options and functionality for the geeks to enjoy.

Now, for the main part. The video playback is absolutely gorgeous. I have the HDDVD addon for my X360 and my PS3's BluRay also and the playback is just amazing. I have One Six Right, a flight documentary and it looks absolutely amazing. You can see the little details in the parts of the aircraft, see the indivitual rivets on the bodies and really appreciate the beauty of the landscape as the some of the planes make some quick manuevers around the screen. The colors are just amazing. From watching sunrises to the camera panning around a particular environment. One really important part of this TV was how the games looked. I'm a big gamer so I was impressed with the playback because it's just very eye pleasing especially with the 240Hz refresh rate. Ninja Gaiden II look amazing, considering how much activity and motion is going on in the screen. To the detail in the bumpmapping and textures in the characters and environment. I will say that I did see a few splotches that appear to be darkness irregularities in the screen where some areas look brighter and some darks but this really only happens when the screen is blank. You never notice it on regular playback. I've seen plenty of TV's in the past several months and this has to be one best displays for the LCD market. My father's Sony Bravia 40V2500 and my previous Toshiba HD TV's are definitely not slouches, they were really good TV's for the price and even now, they still look great, but you can definitely see how these XBR TV's are a cut above the rest. It's like almost looking out a window. They make the eye candy in games and movies that much sweeter.

Even the sound is great for TV speakers, good volume output and good clarity. You can hear some of the little details such as the sound engines revving or swords clashing with each other, even the little clicks in the X360 NXB are vibrant. There's even a demo piano track that showcase the sharpness and clarity that can be produced for built in TV speakers. Definitely not the same as separate sound setup but still great sound for built in speakers.

My final thoughts on this product is that this is definitely one of the best sets that I've see with the current round of tech that we have for TV's. The 2099 price tag is well worth it not only for all that this TV can do feature wise, but most of all, the picture quality, it top notch. As of now, this is as good as LCD gets.

It's a Sony!

I have almost everything Sony. I've bought Sony for several years. What else is there to buy? You can buy less quality I doubt if you could find better quality. I never had to return a Sony. Sorry for this short review but Hey Man! Sony is the best Quality around and there is not a whole lot that needs to be said. Just look at all the high rated reviews! Everybody is saying the same thing just in different ways. It all boils down to Sony has the best Quality. Never mind the small talk negative reviews and I do mean small about color variations during black scenes, that's ridiculous who cares! It's only when no screen shots are being fired or just dead space in movies or tv. It's the quality of the machine and the picture that counts. If I buy a good quality HDTV like a Sony for about $4000 that will last for a good 15 years trust me, and you buy a lesser model like xbrand or whatever for $1700 every 5 years, who winds up spending the most money? You do the math.

Amazing Picture

I absolutely love this TV.....I was on the fence about not getting on of the newer LED backlit set but this has just confirmed that I made a great purchase!
Price was amazing too, 400 cheaper than many of the big box stores, no tax, and free shipping....THANK You

Five Stars for the TV....The Manuals? Not So Much

I purchased the Bravia 52" along with the HTSS360 home theater and Sony Blu-Ray player. They came bundled through a local retailer for a price that was about the same as purchasing separately on Amazon. Thank goodness I did buy through a retailer, but more on that later.

First, the products. Utterly stunning. The picture quality is startling, the sound amazing for what might be considered a low-end unit, and regular DVD's play so well on the Blu-Ray one can hardly tell the difference from Blu-Ray disks. It is a true home theater experience. Even ordinary shows and things like football games become new and different. Internet video is fun and convenient, especially once you get the sound to work right (see paragraph after next).

Second, the manuals. I'm no technophile; for example, I had never heard of HDMI cables previously. And the manuals are classics of assuming that the reader already knows what they are talking about. Once you do understand, you re-read a section and go, "Ah, now I see what they were getting at." To get it set up and operating properly (including the tie-in to a Cox hi-def box) took me three trips back to the retailer (I had a knowledgeable and very patient salesman), plus e-mails and on-line chat with Sony representatives (which was as useless as the manuals), plus perusing on-line forums. On one trip to the retailer I went in with all four manuals (including the Cox) and all four remotes (with their combined approximately 1000 buttons) and had him carefully walk me through, "Ok, this does what? That does what?" taking hand-written notes all the while. In the course of my "superior technology 101" course, he showed me how Bravia Sync works, which in fact is deeply cool. (Unfortunately, the presence of the Cox hi-def box prevents the system from being completely seamless.)

One issue in particular was getting sound from the internet video (e.g., Amazon downloads) to play through the HT speakers. The system was connected with three HDMI cables, but I had to use the TV speakers for internet video. The salesman didn't know what to do, and Sony representatives didn't know what to do. Finally, after gleaning a few hints from on-line forums and a Talmudic-like study of the Bravia manual, I realized that I needed a digital optical cable running from the TV to the HT. Many of you out there reading this are going, "Well, duh, yeah." But, as Donald Rumsfeld said, "you don't know what you don't know," the manual wasn't clear, and the Sony chat rep. found it a mystery. With the addition of the $9.95 cable, the internet sound now is as great as everything else.

In the end, I buy a product for the product, and if manuals happen to be useful and usable, and don't read like they were translated from Japanese to Klingon to English, it's just a plus. Also, in fairness to Sony, with three components that each may tie to different types of components, taking into account the numerous possibilities makes for lots of complexity that I suppose is unavoidable.

I love the products--particularly the TV--and would buy them again (especially knowing what I now know). I'm writing this review primarily to caution those who are as technologically challenged as I: have someone knowledgeable handy.

Best of Best

This is the best Tv we owned, we previously owned a 27 inch Sony, but this exceeded our expectations. Image is crisp, colors are alive, easy to use, came in perfect condition not even a scratch, delivery was 5 stars the guy unpack the TV and helped us to set it up and check for potential deffects, and what you can ask for more...having your own cinema at your home with a fresh bag or popcorn, and just seat back and relax!

Excellent Choice Sony XBR 52

I replaced an older Sony 50" Bravia with the new XBR 52 and what a difference 3 years makes in the TV world. The technology has advanced so far I waited about 5 weeks to write this review as there are so many features on the TV along with the PS3 that I bought along with it I wanted to get used to and be able to understand better. So far I am very pleased with the purchase and the clarity of the picture is outstanding. Throw the BluRay DVD in and it's so clear it's almost scary at times. There are times I do notice some refresh issues while watching TV but I will pretty much relate that to Comcast signal quality because I never see it while watching DVD's. If I covered every detail and option for this TV I would be here for days so I will give an overall Excellent rating for ease of use, picture quality, setup, etc... The only con I can note is the sound quality is not at the excellent rating but it's not bad and for my system I use my external audio DTS receiver so it takes care of that issue. Each day I dive into the settings and options it seems like I find something else that is cool. I LOVE IT.

Excellent TV

I bought a LN52A750 for 1260, enjoyed the TV for two weeks and loved it. Two weeks later I found KDL52XBR9 was on sale for 1600; couldn't refuse the deal and got it PMed in local BB.

Put them side by side and watched Land of Lost Blu-ray for the night. I found myself liked Sony better for the shadow details in my dark home theater setup. Here is my 2 cents:

1. Samsung has better black which leads to more 3-D pop looking. This means it has to sacrifice some shadow details to gain it, at least for the A750 model.

2. The default for both of these TVs is meant to be brought up in a brighter room (like in the retail store, and yes Samsung would look stunning). The out of box default make Samsung un-watchable in my HT setup since it was to bright to begin with. Sony does the same but just a touch better. You'll have to adjust the TV' settings to fit your room's viewing condition.
I used the settings people posted online for exact set for each TV as a starting point, and found myself like Sony much better for the eye constrain (Samsung is still too high of contrast and hard to get it adjust to show shadow detail w/o losing the 3-D pop). Don't get this wrong, I loved my 2 weeks old Samsung but had to let it go for Sony (just my personal preference).

One thing I do notice is the Sony's `Theater' mode does exhibit very poor motion (mottle /blotchy) when it in dark scene, just simply too much enhancement. This match to what the negative commends I found online in regards to this TV. However, I don't use the Theater mode. Instead I tweak and stay with the Custom mode and didn't see the motion problem since.

Here are the settings I used for this Sony TV (credit to hometheatermag dot com:

Not as expected from a Sony!

I totally agree with J. Schmidt's review. The blacks are a total let down from this otherwise excellent tv. Always a big fan of Sony and owned several awesome Sony products from the good old days of cassette Walkmans. As mentioned, I can easily see white patches in all four corners especially in a very dark scene and is highly visible in a totally blacked out screen which is really very disappointing from the almost top of the line TV from Sony.

Also you don't get features like picture in picture and other goodies which you would typically expect from such tv's. This TV replaced my existing 42 inch Panasonic 720p Plasma TV, that brings me to mention about viewing angles. This TV picture is bright and beautiful with 1080p source when viewed right in front, but off angles are not as great as my existing plasma which I expected and I am not complaining or bothered about much. If I had not purchaced this TV from Amazon, I would have certainly returned it and waited for a better price on the XBR8's.

Also the recent free goodies given along with this TV like blu-ray player, HTIB system and sound bars for a much lower price than what I paid makes me wish that I had waited for some more time! In spite of first disappointment from a Sony product, I am still looking to purchase their Projector (vpl-hw15) which I hope will not be a let down as this.

good but lack some options

I have a 47 in XBR9 at home that i bought in 2007. based on my good experience with it we bought this tv for our oil platform rec room. its get lots of use and is generally on 24/7. The picture clarity is great, blue rays are very detailed when played through our PS3. I haven't been able to sit down and do the calibration on it yet because people are always playing madden or guitar hero on it in the evening-- so the color is a little off (kinda red). The menu is nicely organized.
The mate screen reduces glare from florescent lights very well.
The tim of this model and the hidden speakers make it look mutch nicer and sleek than my old tv. Every one out here looks at it and imediatly says "I want one of those for my house"

I have 2 complaints one i think is major and one is minor:

1st--when we try to play guitar hero the timeing is all off unless we put it in "game mode", by pressing the sceene button. the problem is that after two minutes it goes blank then switches back to "auto mode". not sure if this is a firmware glitch or what. on my older

2nd-- when watching The Dark Night i noticed that the fast moving objects on the screen were perfectly clear with well defined edges but arround these edgdes there is about 2 in of blurred background(especially in the scene where they crash the helicopter). My older 120 hz tv didn't seem to have this problem(or if it did it wasnt as pronounced) and it really bothers me. With the 240hz the tv even looks more 3d and wierd than with my older tv, but thats probably a personal preference.

other than that it plays all other games well and desplays our SD satellite nicely, the date it was intalled was october 17 2009 so we'll see how long it goes whitout problems.

Sony LCD XBR9 is bright and clear, I love it

I had owned a Sony SXRD Front-END Project for 3 years now. Since LCD TV is still expensive few years back, I could not afford (4-5K). After purchased this Sony LCD XBR9 TV, I did not want to watch the SXRD TV anymore, it was bright and clear. First time I had owned a LCD TV:-). I plan to go with LCD LED, but it is quite new and expensive for now. It is good to wait for older generation coming later. I did not try to play game with this TV yet, but I am sure it will be amazed. For me, it was a good product (sony) and good service from amazon.

Great TV!

This is an awesome television. I could not be happier. Fantastic picture & sound (amazing!). Lots of extra features. Can't wait until Netflix has streaming movies available on Bravia tvs (supposed to be available soon).

A great LCD TV. Now with Netflix streaming...

It is a great tv with all the latest feature set and many input options. Setup is simple. With the latest update, Netflix is streaming in.

Superb

I bought this a few weeks ago for 1900.00. Consumer reports didn't like this a lot, rating several models above it, including LG's 55 inch LED model. They also said it had a worse than average viewing angle. Well, I love this set. The picture quality remains sharp at wide angles, thank you very much, so I have no problem there. The sound is fine for TV viewing, and with sports the 240 refresh rate really pays off.
(November 16, 2009)

impress but not overly...

I upgraded from a Visio (cheap Costco brand). I am not absolutely sure that it has a distinguishable difference in picture quality. It has lot of features. One of the main disadvantages of having too many features is that it results in too many buttons. The buttons are not always intuitive. So it takes time to get used to. One major complain I have is with the agility of the remote. Channels can only be changed from the remote the TV is very slow to get the signals from the remote. As a result it takes several attempts to change the channel. Also the reception from the remote is not very good and so you end up going to the wrong channel.
One feature that is missing is the ability to create a separate list of the channels that one usually watches.
Among the hundreds of channels we watch only a handful, there is no way to isolate them so that one can see only those. True there is a "favorite" list. but one has to get to it by clicking several other buttons and you can not attach the discription of the channel to them.

Otherwise, it is a good TV, other than the fact that it is a Sony, I am not sure how much of an upgrade it is.
(November 17, 2009)

Great TV!

I ordered this television to replace a two year old Sony V-series 40", and I have to say that as much as I loved that one, the XBR 9 is an incredible upgrade. The picture is unbelievable, and the sound quality is really quite good when compared to other built-in speakers. I was concerned that the side-mounted inputs would be visible from the front, but they are recessed enough that it is not a problem at all. The Bravia internet connection works flawlessly, and I am able to watch my Netflix selections without having to route them through my X-Box now. The remote is also great, easily programmable and even controls all the features of my Direct TV DVR.

I honestly don't have a negative thing to say about this TV.
(November 19, 2009)

LCD vs LED vs plasma.....

First, amazon's arranged delivery service is first class. The TV was delivered, installed and checked for proper functioning by CEVA logistics (so called white glove delivery). I was not expecting it but I surely appreciated it, most other vendors will not have this or will charge you extra. The TV is nice looking, has no glare and is easy to set up. The sound quality is standard for this type of TV. The picture quality is very good for HD but not as good as LED or the best image quality out there plasma TV. The standard definition image is average (not as good as LG's plasma TVs). This is a solid performance TV but if you have a very discriminating vision then you should consider getting a high end plasma TV (Samsung, Panasonic or LG) which by the way will perform much better and most likely will cost a lot less. If you don't like plasma TVs because you have read or were told not to like them then consider the LEDs but be prepared to cough up close to a grand more.

Great Picture Quality Nice sound

So, I upgraded from a Sony SD TV made back in '99. Bought this SONY 52' XBR9 along with the SONY home theater system. Top-notch and unmatched picture quality and nice sound. Very satisified!! Nice Job SONY!

Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR9

This is one terrific TV. The 240 MHz refresh rate makes the picture perfectly smooth...no studdering during fast action scenes. The colors are bright and very realistic. I haven't purchased a blue ray DVD player yet but the non blue ray DVDs are just fine.
The hook up went without of hitch..I did not mount the TV on my wall.
One issue I had was with the shipping. While I was tracking the shipment to Chicago, I saw a notation "package damaged". I immediately called Amazon and they in turn, called the carrier. The carrier told them it was a bit of water damaged but that it should not be a problem. Amazon also told me that if I had any issues when it was delived, I could refuse delivery. When the package arrived, there was no water damage visible but there was a hole punched in the side, apparently by a fork lift. I peered in the hole and there did not seem to be any damage. The delivery folks unpacked it, set it up and went through the initial set up. So far, the TV is working just fine. A bit scary but all seems well.

Sony is Big for a Reason!

I spent a long time deciding on which TV to get. I was initially deciding between the Samsung LED 7000/8000 Series and this Sony XBR9 LCD.

yes, the Samsung LED is bright and thin, but the overall appeal you get is just not the same. the sound isn't that great, either. and after i searched around online for any problems related to the Samsung LED, i found a few regarding corner brightness. I did not, however, find anything related to XBR9.

Sony XBR9, although not as thin, is very impressive. the sound is great and the picture quality is top-notch. seriously, unless you are going to hang ur TV on a wall, or you're going to display your TV outside your house for everyone to admire the thinness of it, the "extra slim" feature doesn't really mean anything.

i've had this TV for almost a month now and i look at it everyday and think to myself, "yes, i've made the right decision!"

it's a beautiful piece of equipment that further beautifies your room :)
(December 03, 2009)

XBR cant be beat!!!

This is my second Sony XBR purchase. This tv rocks! I own an older and smaller XBR2 40 that is amazing and problem free. The XBR9 is also half as thick as the XBR2. I cant say enough good about this tv!
I cant wait for the XBR10 to come out and the price to come down. Rumor has it that the 10 is only 30mm thick and 8lbs lighter.
I will for sure buy again!
(December 04, 2009)

Great TV, awesome pic/features

I upgraded from a 42" TV. WOW what a difference. I was worried it would be too big. however after having the TV for a few months now I can say it's a perfect size. Delivery was simple and easy. They called a few days out and gave me a few options of delivery days/times. They took the TV out of the box and set it up on the stand for me. Normally they would test it, but since it was cold out i signed a waiver that they did not test the TV and that if I had any issues once the TV warmed up they would come back and return the TV. Luckily there were no issues at all.

The internet widgets are really useful. I like that I can stream netflix to my TV and do not have to use my xbox to do this. The interface is simple and easy for netflix/ streaming video. I have a cable box , but was interested in the built in tuner/ TV guide function. It took about 15 minutes or so to scan all my channels. I picked a good amount of HD channels(QAM). The tv guide interface is slick and makes navigating the channels like having a cable box. Very cool feature. Picture quality via built in tuner is better than my Scientific Atlantic cable box over hdmi (I blame my cable box on this)

I do not use built in sound but tried it out for a bit. The built in sound sounds good for what it is, but if you are going to spend this kind of money on an HDTV you might as well pickup a surround sound setup. It was simple to shut off the built in speakers and only use the digital from TV to send to my receiver.

The picture quality on this TV is amazing. Bluray looks amazing. THe opening scene in the dark knight filmed in IMAX at full 16:9 is jaw dropping! The depth and clarity/color is stunning. Motion blur is reduced vs my previous 42" tv. There are a few clear frame/stabilization modes. Standard is the best option in my opinion. If you have it set to high it changes the intent of what a director wants you to watch the movie. For sports / reality shows I can stand the high mode, but for movies I had to switch it off.

There are different scene presets which are great! You can tweak the settings for each type of viewing mode. IE sports, gaming, movies, pc connection, etc etc. This is very useful. My TV is in a bright room (reason i got this over the sammy with a glossy screen) and during the day it's nice to have the presets for different lighting conditions/viewing content etc etc. I use the sports mode for my daytime viewing (back light / color all the way up) During the evening for TV content I use the general setting and tweaked the back light/color to be better for low light viewing. For movie watching (all lights off) I have the "theater" mode tweaked / tuned via THX optimizer (Terminator 2 bluray). TV came really close to THX spec only a few settings needed to be tweaked.

Overall I really am satisfied with this purchase/experience from amazon.
(December 08, 2009)

Great TV and web savvy

From what I have noticed with other LCDs is the picture looks too defined. It ultimately makes non-HD content look fake. This TV does not do that, however adjustments are necessary. I have owned another Bravia from the previous a generation and it is awesome. The sound from the TV is better than average and really a great quality sound, but get a 5:1 or better sound system for your movies. I also own a Aquos which is equally comparable to the Bravia, but the Aquos is from the 1st generation of LCD TV.

So if you don't want to plunge into LED just yet; I suggest the XBR Bravia line. There's great features in this model for connecting to on-line content, however no web browser. There's several widgets and plenty of internet feeds to wet your whistle (i.e. U-Tube...). Definitely get it if you want some internet TV... it's not blazing fast but you can still receive regular broadcasts during widget operation, incredible! But no web browser, new feeds and widgets are created and occasionally there are connection issues with widgets (it was really bad when I first got the TV but it is much better now).
(December 10, 2009)

Amazing colors and clarity!

WOW!! I think that every time I turn on my new 52XBR9. The colors are absolutely astounding. I've researched HDTV for several years and waited till the price on this model came down to my acceptable price range. I didn't want to settle for something less than top quality (I just retired a Sony WEGA XBR, so I'm a bit spoiled). There's no need for me to repeat all the technical attributes mentioned in other reviews. This is simply as good as a TV can get.
(December 13, 2009)

I LOVE THIS TV!

Everything with this TV is so nice! HD upgrade from satalite or cable is a MUST, the SD channels are only ok once you see football on this in HD you expect every channel to look so good. It's a SONY of my ONY!
(December 17, 2009)

Don't dither; just get this one

I was in the high-end stereo/tv business for ten years so I have some background in this area. But you don't need a technical background to make a decision about this television. It is simply stunning. I really didn't think that it would offer a significantly better quality picture than the Samsung DLP unit that it replaced, but it is no contest. Stunning HD clarity. Absolute simplicity to use. It works in perfect concert with my SONY blu-ray player, making it really simple for my AV-challenged wife to watch her videos when I am out with the boys. As far as network connectivity goes, I cannot comment; I don't give a hoot so I haven't even tried it. I bought a calibration disc, but I haven't even opened it since the picture was just so good right out of the box. I ordered this tv through Amazon; it arrived in a week in perfect condition; it took all of ten minutes to hook up. I opted for LCD to avoid the glare that I saw on all of the plasmas in the stores; this was an important issue for me. If you are dithering about which tv technology to go with, just stop here at the SONY. (I can't believe I am writing this; when I was in the stereo business SONY was a laughingstock, in audio, at least. I feel so dis-loyal. A Joe Lieberman moment.)

Great TV Plenty of inputs

This is a great LCD tv. I am switching from a 9 year old tube tv to this ( waiting till the prices dropped) and there could not be a more dramatic difference. I have vision trouble and this TV has cured that for me. Its nice having inputs on the side for HDMI and Composite.
The TV is highly customizable; allowing you to change most nuances of the picture however I am happy usually just leaving it on the vivid setting.
The Only thing that I would change is having the computer input on the side as well but its a small thing.
Overall I highly recommend. It was well worth the $900 I spent

Awesome TV

You cannot compare Sony with other companies. The picture quality on this TV is realistic. You-tube, Netflix, Amazon on demand, and some other video services. You can make your current PC(with Windows media player 11 and higher) as a media server. Lots of features on this TV and it is really worth spending money on this TV.

Netflix doesnt work

Upgraded from a Sony Wega 32 inch CRT that we bought in 2004. Paired up the XBR9 with a Sony BDP360 Blu Ray, a Pioneer 1019AH and an XBOX360. Also purchased a universal remote to control all the above.

Cons:
1. We have not been able to get Netflix to work. Both times we tried it the TV froze and then re-started itself. Not sure if that is a Netflix issue or a Sony issue. We were able to watch Netflix through our Xbox 360 so I havent followed up. The Amazon seems to work although I have only watched previews.
2. Reflection: this may be a standard LCD issue but we were surprised by how much the tv reflects. At night it reflects our track lighting like a mirror so we watch TV with the lights off in the TV room but keep the lights in the adjoining room on and it is perfect.
3. Connections: These are at the back of the TV and hard to reach when the TV is already mounted. Might have been easier if they were at the bottom of the TV or closer to the bottom.

Pros:
1. I generally agree with all the positives on this tv. It has a great picture and is good looking.
2. I am impressed by the way it interacts with the different devices. I think the HDMI technology allows more dynamic thinking, for e.g the TV switches off the TV speakers automatically when it senses a receiver. My old school 2004 TV did not do that.

SIMPLY AMAZING!!!

I purchased this TV in November 0f 2009 and finally got a chance to set it up for the new year. Of course we all know the pain of disconnecting everything you own and setting up something new. The picture on this will blow your mind. HDMI is also so much easier...fewer cables, but that doesn't mean there still won't be a lot of them. However, setting this all up is well worth the effort.

Setup...simply easy! Using HDMI and staying with SONY, absolutely brilliant. It all integrates and works well together. (Not like the old S-Link). Plug in a SONY HDMI compatible component and hit the 'SYNC MENU' button and you can set it all up. Now I hit one button and on goes the TV, on goes the Directv Salletite DVR HR-21 and the Sony HTCT100 Sound Bar with Subwoofer. It's great. And the HTCT100 is just right for a small room (if you don't really need surround sound it's perfect!)!

The picture quality on this is SIMPLY AMAZING!!! Yes, there might be a few sets out there with slightly better blacks...

I must say, I had not seen this TV in person before buying and I don't think it will disappoint.

Thanks SONY and Thanks Amazon. Got free delivery with Amazon and they had my delivery scheduled within 72 hours of my order.

Total entertainment!

I got this tv as part of a Bravia package... and WOW!

Everyone knows it has great picture. Let me focus on the real value add here...

The LAN port. It works awesome with Netflix instant queue. If that alone is not enough - it acts as a total media center when you have a server on your home network running windows media player 11+.

I can access my entire mp3 library with my remote control, and blast it out my 5.1 surround sound. They even add some visual candy on-screen while you listen. I can browse my plethora of digital photos and view them in clarity never before seen. I can watch recorded TV or other mpegs from my server PC.

This TV is now a priceless tool in enjoying the investments I have already made.

Not a great TV

We got this TV at a great buy of 1700$ which included BD player and Home theater system, got carried away by the price, I switched my mind from Samsung B750 to buy this XBR9.I got this TV and plugged in my DirecTV and was watching for 2 days and it wasnt very impressive, sound is great but the picture looks grain or blurry. I try to change a lot of settings like Backlight, gamma and hue, so I made it a little better still it is not like awesome and impressive. On top of this the TV went blank and it wont come up until I plug the power out and power back in. I called SONY customer service and their service was great and filed as a defective TV and took it to the store and returned it and bought SAMSUNG B750.After booting up my Samsung, wow what a difference in Picture quality and you can see a 3D effect on the figures.Even the non HD chanels are better looking that sony HD channel.I made a right decision else I would have been stuck with this poor SONY TV and be regretting for that.If you are looking for a good picture quality to show yourself and your friends please dont buy this TV, then you will get mad everyday.

Pros : SONY Support, Sound,
Cons : Bad Picture Quality, Grains and no sharpness on the image, blurry

Geeked out!

After significant soul-searching over what I wanted out of a TV, I could not be happier about my XBR9 purchase! As other reviewers have accurately said, the picture quality is simply outstanding. I have FiOS as a source, which is almost unfair, and has inspired envy from friends and family. The thin bezel makes it look as impressive when it's turned off as when it's on.

If I must offer some criticism, as other reviewers have mentioned, it would be the "glow" in the upper corners during pitch-black scenes. For those who are black-level geeks, this will almost certainly be a deal-breaker for you. I, however, am not. I prefer to enjoy sports and content with some degree of light/color to it, so it's a non-issue. Again, the quality and COLOR is mind-blowing! The 240Hz is money... I'm glad I didn't compromise on refresh rate, because I can clearly see the difference from 60Hz and even 120Hz LCD screens.

Admittedly, I didn't buy this TV thru Amazon, but I did a majority of my research here, so I feel justified leaving a review. I was lucky to find it on sale at a brick-and-mortar store for under $1500, so it was a no-brainer, but even at $1800 this is a heck of a deal. Point, click, ship!! You'll love it.

Sony XBR Broken after 1.5 years

Being a long-time Sony customer, I went on to buy a Sony's top end line - XBR, hoping that it will last me for many many years. Only after one and a half years, the TV had a panel failure (according to the Sony authorized repair tech). Sony will not help you correct the issue. They have lost me as a customer.

Very happy with this TV

It's big, the picture is clear and crisp, sound is great! Excellent value for the price. What more can I say?

best picture quality i've seen

I've had my TV for about a year and have no problems whatsoever with it. The picture quality is simply amazing- in my opinion it definitely beats the competition and is worth the higher price.
