Reviews of LG 42LH40 from Amazon.com

The Dream Machine

Well, after my youngest daughter bought her 6th HDTV and USES all 6 of them, I figured it was time Dad bought his first. I own a computer store so I researched very completely the different brands out, there which all claim to be the best.Forget the hype, this LG 42" seemed to make the best sense to me for the features it offered for the price. It arrived a day early which pleased me and set-up was even easier than imagined. The sound is as the old hippies said is FAR OUT DUDE!! The picture is PERFECT! NO doubt in my mind that research paid off big time. At 36 pounds, a kid could install this Flat Panel. The only draw back is that 12 hrs later it was $60 less. But had I known how much I would love it, I'd have bought it even sooner. My 4+YR old RCA is now in the bedroom. It too,has a great picture for a 27" Big Box TV with very good speakers. Sorry 'bout your luck old faithful, but the LG is my new love! Buy it and love it, it don't get any better than this. D. Diel New Mexico

Great value, excellent LCD for bright rooms

Very happy with this TV after three weeks of use. Wanted a decently priced LCD for my family room which gets a good amount of sunlight (even with blinds closed). LG 42LH40 didn't disappoint! We primarily use the set for television (AT&T Uverse) and Xbox 360 games/Netflix. HD sports are outstanding and Xbox games are razor sharp. I've seen virtually no motion blur from either input.

Setup was simple, plug in the HDMI cables and go. Training the Uverse remote to control the set was painless. Colors were outstanding out of the box in "Natural" mode and the automatic tuning wizard was very easy to follow.

Only small negative so far is mediocre black level. It's noticeable at night when watching a movie, but I've never been distracted by it. Several "professional" reviews knock this set for black levels but I honestly don't see the big deal. If you want deep blacks, buy a plasma.

Definitely recommend this set to anyone looking for a great value in the 40" LCD range. Amazon ordering and shipping were great. Shipping company called to confirm my selected appointment and showed up on time.

Great TV, Great features

I'm not geek, but I know a good TV when I see it. Picture quality is much better than my old HDTV, and brighter too. Love the sound features. Easy hookup. I now have 3 LG tvs in my home (42, 32, and 20) so I guess I'm now a loyal LG customer.

LG 42LH40 is everything I hoped for...

I've had this tv for about 4 months now and it is everything I wanted in an HDTV. The picture is crystal clear out of the box and even though you are suppose to calibrate these tvs, I haven't had a need to do so. I wanted at least a 42 inch HDTV, LCD (to avoid plasma glare), 120 HZ to avoid motion blur, and under $1300. I looked at a few Samsungs and Sonys but both brands go from 40 inches to 46. I also considered a 46 inch Sharp but wasn't impressed with the video quality. So the LG 42LH40 is what I bought.

The screen is bright and beatiful and sports in high-def look amazing. The menus are clear and intuitive which makes changing settings a breeze. The remote isn't anything fancy but I do like the large input button that allows you to quickly switch between devices by displaying large icons that represents your inputs with the active inputs in color. The tv has a on off indicator on the lower right hand side that glows blue when off and red when on. This light also does a little Knight Rider type animation when the tv has been turned on and is warming up. Blue-Ray movies give you the best picture, then high-def tv, then upconverted dvds, then standard-def tv. Standard-def looks pretty crummy but that is to be expected on any large HDTV. Sound is also pretty darn good to be coming from built speakers.

Overall
Pros - Picture, menus, # of inputs, sound, style

Cons - Remote isn't backlit

Great TV, Futureproofed Purchase

This is a spectacular TV.

As my first HDTV purchase, I did a lot of research going in. Plasmas are a bit cheaper, but due to concerns about burn-in (as I'm using the set with a Home Theater PC, which has a number of static elements that are often on-screen) I decided I wanted to go with an LCD panel. Then came the questions of brand, size, and features. LG is very well-reviewed, looked great in the store, and has a better reputation than, say, Phillips or Vizio. (This is not to say all the panels from the latter manufacturers seemed poor, but they definitely appear to use cheaper components.) 42" is a great middle-high size point, not so huge that it won't fit in a smallish apartment like mine, yet big enough to really feel sizable. And, as for features, this really has most of the bells and whistles one could ever want, including 120Hz playback for Blu-ray content.

The TV has a nice smattering of inputs--I have it hooked up via HDMI to my HTPC--and looks great. It has a very subdued aesthetic, with a glossy bezel (that, yes, will attract fingerprints, but wipes off easily with the included cleaning cloth) and a fairly unobtrusive idle/power light. The on-screen display is very well thought out and easy to navigate, with coherent groupings of the various settings, and quick access to some of the more commonly accessed on a special "Quick Menu". The built-in sound is good for a TV, but they're still built-in speakers, so don't expect anything mind-blowing here (or on any TV, really).

And, lastly, it looks great. It has a wonderful built-in calibration program that really has resulted in a very balanced picture. It also has good energy saving and brightness features, easily accessible via a dedicated button the remote, so you can drop down the brightness to 25 or 50% if it's too bright. It also has an auto-sensing feature for brightness (much like the feature seen on Apple laptop displays), though I found I tend to prefer it a little brighter than the auto-sensing feature would dictate.

All in all, an easy five stars. Highly recommended, especially given the 120Hz proofs you for the future. And, as an aside, don't waste money on a 240Hz TV. You've already got 5:5 pulldown with Blu-ray (24p, which divides into 120Hz evenly but not into the usual 60Hz). It took a while for me to be sold on 120Hz as a worthwhile factor in making my purchasing decision, but 240Hz really is more of a marketing ploy than anything.

Great HDTV for the money!!!!

I bought this TV at Frys when they had it on a one day sale at $599. It was purchased on Friday 10/23/2009. This TV doesn't disappoint at all! PS3 looks georgous and HDTV looks phenomenal! The colors pop (Sammy's pop a little brighter) and the contrast ratio is out of this world (70k:1). I couldn't believe that Frys marked it down that low and even the employees were baffled! They said it would be a good deal for a 60 hz TV. This is 120 hz and it is awesome. You can notice some motion blurring but if on game mode you hardly see it.

One thing that is great is the sound on this TV. It is much better than your typical LCD 20 watt speakers. It is just amazing and very clear!

I haven't spent time calibrating because I just got it yesterday but I will and have heard that this can help a great deal with picture quality.

Overall, I'm impressed immensely and am just glad that I got a great deal on it! If you can find it at the price I paid or even at $699 then do yourself a favor and pick this bad boy up!

Another fine product from LG

I purchased this TV because it looked like a good value for the specs of the TV. Once I received the TV, it was easy to setup. Inputs are clearly labeled, and menus are easy to understand and use. The picture quality is great, and the sound is pretty good, too. I have had this TV for 3 weeks now, and have experienced no troubles at all. I highly recommend this TV, and any other LG products. I have several other LG devices, and have always been more than satisfied with the quality, reliability, and pricing of their products.

Amazin Television

The LG 42lh40 is an amazing television and can't be beat for the Amazon price.

Pros: It was really easy to set up and finding the channels was automatic. The picture out of the box is stunning but it also allows you to change the image via a very intuitive Picture Wizard. The sound is really nice and loud even at low settings. The 120hz makes everything very smooth though there are some artifacts on the high setting (I use it for everything except Blu-ray movies).

Cons: The menu is easy to navigate but some of the features should have been a remote button.

Notes: This is my first HDTV and a huge step up from my 28" Zenith which I have been using for the past 15 years. I play PS3 games and the picture on this television is so incredible on my games that it's like I got a new game system.

OMG!!! I can see, I'm not going blind

LOL! Seriously, I can't believe what I am seeing -- Everything.

My old RCA CRT 36" dinosaur, 300lb TV was making me think that I was going blind. With standard cable input, I can now read the top of the screen banner showing the team/score/downs/yards-2-go/quarter/time-left with no problem.

This is the new, the great, the must have,,, and the price is dropping as I type this. I don't care that I missed saving a few bucks, as I can now enjoy the games.

Great LCD!

This is my first LCD tv. The picture is excellent, also the sound and is too easy to set up. LG rules, and that price is hard to beat it. I will recommend it to everybody!

A TV made for gaming!

After about a month of reading blogs, online forums and massive reviews I purchased this set. The number one priority was gaming. I play lots of high motion reaction driven games, fighers, rock band, and shooters. Without getting into the dirty details of video lag, I chose this set because it was one of the fastest. Even tho its not in the description this tv has a 2.6ms response rate. When setup properly there was almost no recorded lag on this tv. It came down between the non 120hz version of this tv and this one. I decided on this one because I do occasionally watch tv and perfer compensation for motion artifacts. In the options it allows you to set it for, OFF, LOW and HIGH. I absolutly love the menu interface for this tv. Its very intuitive and is visually appealing. When changing channels thru the integrated tuner it was one of the fastest I have come across in quite a while.

Overall this is a terrific set and you cant beat the price. If you looking for a gaming set seriously consider this one! If you dont believe me do the research yourself. :)

Brilliant Picture

This was an upgrade for us, from an older Sharp Aquous 32 1080i LCD bought 5 years ago.

The picture quality is quite frankly, amazing, compared to our 1080p sony downstairs, and compared to the old Sharp. It must be the 120hz.

On many shows, such as CSI, or Californication, or Desperate Housewives, you feel like you're actually on the set, it is so life-like. My wife actually finds it a bit disconcerting, but I think she is getting used to it.

This weekend SyFy was running a James Bond marathon in HD, and even those old movies looked amazing. I've never seen an old movie look so clear. I'm talking about the old Sean Connery Bond movies, watching them and feeling like you were on the set, it was impressive.

Almost everything we have watched is great, except Grey's Anatomy. For whatever reason that one show does not look good on this TV, it must be the equipment they film with or something. Other shows on ABC look fine, other dramas, sports, movies, it is just that one show.

We also got an LG network capable blu-ray player (network capable means it can connect to the Internet and get things like Netflix for you, which is really nice). And the TV talks to the DVD player so we can use one controlled to control both, except if we're using the TV controller it doesn't have a disc-menu button, so that is kinda annoying.

Initially the sound was kinda bad on the TV, it was really hard to hear dialog. There is an audio setting called "dialog" something er other and once we turned it on the problem was solved, so make sure you do that. I'm surprised it was not on by default.

The only thing to really complain about is the delivery. They pushed back the date a couple times and then on the delivery day missed their window and didn't show up until like 7 at night, they were nice and efficient when they got here, but obviously the delivery company needs to hire more drivers.

Makes me excited to watch movies again

This 42" 1080p HDTV from LG is easy to set up, looks great, stunning picture quality, and easy to use remote. I got it from a certain yellow-tag retailer for $750 and I'm very pleased. Paired with the LG BD390 player and Monster HDMI cable and it's a great match. Audio is good, but I haven't hooked up my old 5.1 surround-sound system to it to compare yet. I watched the remastered-edition DVD "Patton" on the BD player and is was amazing. Bottom line - I'm very satisifed with this purchase and recommend it to anoyone.

Outstanding TV for this price range

Ordered it on Amazon last week during a black friday markdown (you'll be hating me for the price I paid, here on Amazon with FS...$598. NOT a joke.) Set arrived today, white-glove service (free shipping!), and the set was easy to set up and calibrate to the room settings. This set retailed for over $1000 barely 6 months ago, and it shows.

Picture quality is outstanding, and I'm primarily using it as a PC Monitor at full 1080p 1920x1600. Google Earth will blow your mind in HD. Haven't tried it with Blu-Ray yet, but I'm sure that will also be spectacular.

If you can get this set for anything below $800, just do it. Why settle for 60hz or 720p when it's last year's technology? This set has essentially the latest feature-set (1080p, 120 hz) with more than enough tweak-able settings for the video enthusiast. The physical build is sleek and well-constructed, and there are so many neat design elements - including the standby light (you'll see what I mean when you buy one)!

All around pleased! Plus with 1yr LG warranty and the extra year from AMEX, it's covered for quite awhile.

So keep your eyes peeled for a random Amazon price-drop, and you won't be sorry!

Class Act

This HDTV is a class act. The picture for the HD programming is wonderful and, while the sound could be better (it's not Bose), it is pretty good and much better than what you get with most TVs. The picture also shows every flaw (in standard definition programming), but that's because the picture quality is so sharp. The menu is partly graphic and easy to use. And it has a built in digital receiver, which would be good if you ever find yourself relying on free digital TV.

I'm a petite, 48 year old woman, who drug the boxed LG HDTV into the apartment, took it out of the box, attached the swivel pedestal, picked the entire thing up and put it on my TV stand all by myself. The TV is lightweight and easy to handle.

CAN'T BEAT OVERALL VALUE

Bought this TV on black Friday at a large electronic retailer for just under 750 (that's more than 50 less than what Amazon was charging). I have to say that for the value of what you get for the money, this TV would have been worth paying 900 or more for.
You get a 120Hz set that also has the LG AutoMotion Plus feature which is a de-judder functionality that smoothes out the picture. I saw de-judder at a friends house once and hated it (he has a Samsung set). On this LG, however, I keep the setting at low and it is fabulous. It is barely noticeable but smoothes out the picture wonderfully.
I gave the set a 4-star rating for appearance as it is not as clean as some of the 120 Hz Sony sets and the Samsung TOC sets, but it looks great. It's hanging above my fireplace and it's definitely a step up from the Sausming 5-Series 37" set that I had there before.
Overall, I would highly recommend this TV even at the Amazon price as it is an awesome set with a great picture that will not disappoint in any way. Even the sound quality from the stock speakers is very good.

The only real gripe that I have with this TV is that the de-judder and 120Hz components are not separate functionality (meaning that if one is turned on so is the other). But keeping the setting at low as I do will give you a near flawless picture without the annoyance of some other de-judder technologies.

(November 30, 2009)

fantastic TV

My previous TV set was 17-year old Mitsubishi, no wonder that this TV feels like I being on a different planet.

I do however see some pixelation with fast moving objects (in HD), not sure if this is in the signal or something else.

I can't wait to get home after work and turn this TV on. Phenomenal experience.

And 42" size was ideal for my situation.
(December 03, 2009)

Amazing TV! (I also explain LG's "120hz" TruMotion option, which is different from 120hz refresh rate.)

As an owner of a previous LCD and a Plasma, I have to say, this HDTV completely blows the others away in all aspects. The speaker system is pretty amazing (most things can be watched in the 20's volume range - this set goes up to 100!), and it's virtual surround sound isn't bad at all (when watching movies, I put the sound on Cinema mode, with the treble and bass turned all the way up). The auto-volume is also a nice feature. No more crazy-loud commercials! This feature fixes that issue by normalizing the commercials to a lower volume.

I want to draw special attention to the 120hz function of the TV, which is buried in the expert settings of the video options. LG advertises this feature as 'TruMotion 120hz', but the option in the menu simply states "120hz." This can cause some confusion for some people. Let me explain what is going on. This TV will refresh at 120hz, no matter what - which is exactly what you want it to do. The 120hz option in the menu that I am referring to has nothing to do with that - is not really turning 120hz on or off. The name of the option is misleading. It really should be called "TruMotion" (as LG calls it, rather than just "120hz" - which implies that you are changing the refresh rate. Samsung refers to the feature as "Auto Motion Plus.") To make a long story short, this feature has to do with frame interpolation, not refresh rate. You will find that this setting should be OFF for films (unless you want the frame rate to look "weird" and more like video instead of film) and either on LOW or HIGH (depending on your preference) for sports and video games - basically, you want the feature on for things that are shot at 60 frames per second, and off for films, which are shot at 24 frames per second. There are some times when the 120h setting can be tolerated on LOW for films, but after a while, you will just find yourself thinking that it looks a little too "weird," and too realistic - NOT film-like. Keep the RealCinema option on (which makes 24-frame film look better). The TV will know if something is 24fps or 60fps, and will adjust accordingly. So, don't think that you have to turn that feature off when you're watching sports. You don't. Just keep it on and the TV will know when it needs to use it.

This TV only needed some MINOR calibration to make the brightness/colors what they should be. I had to heavily calibrate my other HDTVs, but this one only needed a little calibration to have perfectly accurate colors. It has 4 HDMI ports (more than I would ever need!), an optical audio port, and some analog ports (which I won't ever need to use, considering it has 4 HDMI ports!). I can't wait to purchase a Blu-Ray home theater system to compliment this new TV, but LG has decided that Europe and Korea are the only places that deserve their RESPECTABLE Blu-Ray home theater in a box systems. The two they released here in the US do not play DivX or MKV files via a USB stick (the standalone LG BD390 does, but I want the feature to be included in a home theater system, like they have released overseas). Hopefully LG will release the good systems in their 2010 lineup.

Now, back to the TV. I really don't have too much else to say, because everything else is pretty perfect. The menus are easy to navigate, switching inputs is easy, and there is a "quick menu" button on the remote that makes it easy to switch between video and audio modes without having the giant menu on the screen while you do it. I want to stress how happy I am with the speakers, once more. While I need to have surround sound when I get my inevitable Blu-Ray player, I have no problem with the built-in speakers. They are easily the best built-in speakers I've ever had the pleasure of listening to. Did I mention that there is also an option that makes the human voice higher than the background noise (for those films with poor audio, or those people watching that don't care much for bass and just want to hear the dialog). This feature disables the virtual surround sound (which I believe was also disabled by default, so make sure you go and turn that on if you want to really enjoy the speakers) because it lowers everything that is not on the same frequency of the human voice. I was skeptical at first, but it really works, and it works well. But, since my hearing is good, I don't need to use this feature yet, so I will stick to the built in virtual surround sound system that the TV comes with (which, on cinema mode with the bass and treble turned up all the way sounds really amazing).

In closing, amazing LCD HDTV. I highly recommend this item.

Almost Excellent

After going to Best Buy 3 times to look at LCD TVs I concluded that the LG gave the most beautiful viewing experience compared to the Toshiba I was considering as well. Now after getting the LG and after 5 weeks of viewing I'm still delighted with the choice. Picture quality is superb, sound is excellent from its speakers. Audio is clear, and that lets me keep the volume much lower than other sets I've listened to because of the distinct clarity. Additionally the HDMI inputs allow me to connect a laptop computer and have high definition video and sound all from the same cable.
As mentioned in another review there is one glaring deficiency in the LG and it became a headache for me in not being able to connect the TV to our two channel analog sound system. LG only has an optical-digital sound output (Toslink) connector to connect to sound systems. Unless folks have a relatively new sound amplifier with 5.1 surround sound they will not be able to run the TV sound along with its connected peripherals (DVD, VCR, computer, etc) to their home stereo system. The Toshiba LCD TV had the rca analog outputs which would make that possible.
The round-about for this was for me to pick up a converter that would change digital audio to analog audio, which is made by Gefen for about $60.Be careful though if you go this route. Gefen makes several models and the one you would most likely want converts 5.1 surround sound as well as other sound from optical-digital to analog. I made the mistake of getting the converter that only converts the other sound. The result is DVD, VCR, and computer sounds all convert but not the TV station sounds.

Great TV!

This is my first HDTV, and doing some research helped. Never expected quality this good from LG, but I guess times have changed. My parents have Sony HDTV, and the picture on their Bravia is not nearly as good as this. With some minor adjustments, u can get perfect color balance and contrast! Make sure to use HDMI cable, no other type of connection will give you the same quality. HD channels look perfect, and even broadcast channels look good, which is no small achievement for an hdtv set. Sound is good, but I got a blue-ray LG system to go with LG 42LH40, and it rocks!

(December 08, 2009)

They Fixed The Audio Synch

Got this back in Sept and noticed about a 1-2 sec audio delay synch in HDMI on TV speakers compared to when I use the speakers on my surround sound rcvr. Thru my rcvr the synch was perfect. Took about 6 weeks for me to get in their queue, but LG sent over a tech and he uploaded a firmware update via USB and now the audio is in synch. It matches almost exactly to the rcvr. Was happy before, b/c the sound synched with my rcvr speakers, but now I am even happier. Frankly, it's good to know they do take care of their issues!

Update Dec 11 - Also, before the firmware update, I tried the manual adjustments mentioned on some posts where you set the system synch to zero (it is defaulted to 20ms or something). But that really does only minimal improvement, almost none. The firmware update acutally did the job!
(December 11, 2009)

People with lip sync problem, here is a fix

"1) press and hold the menu button on the side of the TV then press and hold the menu button on the remote until the display says "Enter Password"

2) enter four zeros from the remote control to get past the password screen (you should now see an "IN START" menu with all kinds of information listed)

4) look at the lower left corner where there should be a numbered menu -- menu option 4 should say "System"

5) use the down arrow until the word "System" is highlighted (pressing the number '4' will not take you down the menu) and press the enter key (you should now be on the System menu near the middle of the screen)

6) press the down arrow to option 9 "Lip Sync Adjust" and then press the left arrow to adjust the value to zero (mine was set to 20 from the factory)

7) press the return key to get out of the menu and bingo, you're done!"

Viewing Angle

Simple review:

PROS:

1- Easy to hook up.

2- The sound is very good .

3- No blurring while gaming or watching sports.

CONS:

1- VIEWING ANGLE VERY LIMITED WITH THIS TV.
HEAD ON SCREEN LOOKS GREAT HOWEVER YOUR VIEWING
EXPERIENCE DROPS OFF DRAMATICALLY EVEN AT THE SLIGHTEST
ANGLE.

This set was bought for the kids who will mostly use it for gaming.
So considering the location, the user's and the price I paid NOT a problem.
I would not recommend this as your main TV. For me my Samsung is the best no
matter what the angle.

Love the Picture however it came with sound problems!

First I can say I love the TV. Wonderful picture easy to set up, Delivered to the door in record time, however;

Lip Sync was off, kind of like watching a dubbed foreign movie on most channels (Some of the true HD music programs worked great)

First I called comcast, they came out.. tested everything.. Wasn't their problem!

Went on line saw many other complaints for the same problem. Went to the LG web site and opened a repair claim, 45 min chat with online help, was no help, said they would send out a repair person for a software update.. one week went by.. on line chat again trying to get a repair date.. All they said is the work order was in the system. I called LG several days later.. still no help??

Was getting ready to send the TV back to Amazon and then after 3 weeks I get a call from LG, They had to send the patch to the repair person, now after 4 weeks the repair person shows up, installed the update with some problems. Seems to work much better.

Sure glad Amazon extended their return times for the Holidays.. Just in case the problem continues..

Good quality purchase

My husband finally convinced me it was time to upgrade to a flat screen tv, but I put a price limit of $500-$800 - after all, it is just a tv. I researched both online, in store & via friends/family. This was the best pick, and Amazon got it within my price range. It looks really sharp just as a piece of furniture, and I almost can't tear my eyes away from the HD quality when it is turned on. Easy set up, and contrary to some reviews about the stand - I woke up from a nap one day to find my 12lb cat precariously balanced on top of the tv, and the tv survived without so much as a wobble when I flew at him & sent him scampering.

I heart my LG LCD

I bought this for myself as an early Christmas gift. Love it! My only complaint is that everyone must stop shooting in interleaves and start shooting progressive. I hate when I can see the fields, but that is not the tv's fault. The picture is beautiful and sharp. The colors are fantastic. Everything is so clean it looks like you are looking through a window. You may be surprised how normal celebrities look on it.
luv luv luv this LG TV. I'm so glad I bought it.

42" LG TV

Unit arrived well packed and with good unpacking instructions. Setup was as snap. the documentation was easy to follow and the hookup to cable was straight forward. Initially, we did not have HD enabled on our cable, and the picture was just so/so - not as good as our older analog sets. However, as soon as we got the HD box for the cable, it was FANTASTIC. Even the non-HD channels seem better than the older sets. We do not have a theater sound system, but the sound is pretty fair. They provide a DVD copy of the complete manual, which has been pretty handy. We picked the 42" because it was as large as we could fit into our den. It fit very nicely in a 48" cabinet from IKEA.
(December 24, 2009)

it was easy

I researched all the Tv's 37inch and above and decided that 42inch would be good for me. When buying any Tv make sure it has all the features that you are going to use because in electronics you pay for what you get. Don't buy more gadgets on it than you need and if you play a lot of video games you need more HZ. If you get less HZ the TV is usually cheaper ands the picture isn't as good. Once I choose the features I shopped around for best price for my money. The LG 42LH40 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Gloss Black had everything that I wanted and priced great and free shipping. What more could I ask for. It came within a couple of days of ordering and was delivered inside my front door. I arranged for the time and date of delivery and it came exactly on time. I particularly liked the fact that I didn't have to lug it home or have someone pick it up for me. It was easy to set up. I still haven't watched the DVD that came with it to set it up. It works great and has an adjustable energy saver on it that I really like. I recommend this TV.

Happy TV Customer

Very happy with the purchase. $765.00 with free shipping from amazon. prompt delivery and setup.

Verizon fios HDTV rocks with the TV. very impressed with picture quality.

Backlight on wall?

This tv is great. Picture quality, sound, and features are all excellent. My only concern is that the backlight seems to be leaking out the top and bottom vents on the back of the tv and shines on the wall. You can't see it with the lights on, but it is noticeable in a dark room. While this really isn't that big of a deal, it is the only thing that bothers me about the tv since I almost watch everything at night with the lights off. I am about 9 feet away and can see it above and below the screen while watching it straight on.

Does anyone know if I can change certain settings that will minimize this, or is it just the structure of the tv and can't be fixed? I have tried lowering the backlight but it doesn't seem to change.
(December 28, 2009)

Excellent after some tweaks

Pretty much everything has already been mentioned by other reviews, so I will mention something new/updates.

1)The HDMI audio sync issue was a big concern when I decided to buy this TV, but LG seems to have fixed this with a new firmware. I am using a comcast HD DVR box and a DVD player through HDMI, and audio/video syncs properly.

2) Picture quality is BAD without adjusting the picture settings. The colors (look washed out) and the rendering will really disappoint you, but dont judge this tv until you tweak the settings. Google "xxlh40 setting" and try out a few variations. I either use the cnet settings for LG xxlh30 or a hometheatremag setting for this tv. Picture looks AMAZING with these changes. (fyi: dont associate brightness with good picture quality!)

3) I found it annoying that I have to change PQ settings for EACH input, but its not a big deal once you have done all your tweaking.

4) Trumotion 120hz. I only use this at "Low" for sports. Never use this setting for movies...it just looks weird.

5) There is no headphone out. I use a AV-to-3.5mm converter, which was $2-3.

6) Some people are complaining about the sound quality. I am guessing that they are comparing it to their home theater setup. This tv has excellent speakers! I use my HT setup only for movies now.

7) I think this tv is better than my friend's samsung ln650 in every area except "blackness." Blacks looks much better on samsungs, but I paid half of what he paid!
Hope this helps.

Love It

This is my first flat screen TV. I have been looking for over a year for a good deal with all the bells and whistles I wanted. I had heard good things about the LG so when this TV came up on Amazon for a great price I ordered it. I am more than pleased with it. The picture is fantastic and the sound is great. It is very customer friendly. I have never ordered anything this expensive from Amazon but they were great, it even came 3 days sooner than they said. I would recommend this TV to anyone.

Great TV for price -- Some initial issues, but fixed quickly by LG

I ordered this TV on the Black Friday deal. I was hesitant to buy a TV online, but the great deal and lack of tax made me take a chance. Unfortunately, my fears proved true. When the TV arrived, the sound would not work out of the HDMI. If I had bought it at a local store, I would have taken it back. However, since I couldn't just do that, I spent a while trying different HDMI devices, different cables, etc. from all over the house, only to conclude that I had a TV with a defective HDMI. If it didn't work, why did I still give it 4 stars? I debated on 3, but settled on 4, because (1) when the problem arose, LG was great to deal with and the end result with a great, relatively inexpensive TV was worth a few incoveniences and (2) I don't think the fact that I was unlucky enough to get the one bad TV is worth ruining the overall rating of an entire product so long as the problem is taken care of hassle free, as it was for me. My LG experience: I called customer service late Friday night, and they set up a tech for first thing Tuesday morning. (I should note that I am in a major city, so that may have helped me out on time.) He came out, confirmed the problem, re-set me up to use component while he ordered a new board (which, by the way, still had a great picture using component). He was then back two days later with the new board and got the HDMI working again. Since all the other reviews address the great picture issues, etc. (with which I wholeheartedly agree), I just wanted to compliment LG on their service as well. I know some of you will think that since someone received a broken set, there must be quality issues with this product. While it is possible, none of the other reviewers seem to have had the same problem and, unfortunately, whenever you buy electronics, there is a risk that you will be the unlucky one who gets the one that has the glitch and stuck with the incoveniences. There is no way to know if the problem started at LG, at an Amazon warehouse, during delivery, etc... However, a company with good customer and warranty service makes up for the risk, especially when the end result is a fully functioning TV with a fantastic picture and sound for a very reasonable price. Definitely still recommended despite my initial problems.

this is great

The TV arrived in great shape and is all that i expected. Nice picture, great sound and is just fantastic.
(December 30, 2009)

Can't beat the features for the price

We wanted a good-quality TV for a low price and that's exactly what we got. The LG has a good number of features that are relatively easy to access through on-screen menus. The full manual on CD is adequate; the on-screen easy access manual is rather slim pickings.

The picture quality is about what one would expect for the price but if you want better, it comes with a hefty price tag. There's a variety of input/output options, although I wouldn't have minded a 3.5mm headphone jack.

All-in-all, it's a nice TV that gets the job done.
(December 31, 2009)

Picture is amazing!

I did a pretty indepth review before I bought....wanted a strong picture quality, but did not want to spend an outrageous amount of money. When it came, I have to admit I struggled with the initial setup. It does need a little bit of calibration, but the system has multiple ways to get it to what you like. Initially, the picture did not come in very clear. I use Comcast and it was a little blurry at first. I talked to Comcast and the gal said to leave the box on for about 4 hours, and sure enough the picture got better and better.

Watching TV shows in HD with this set is mind boggling! You feel like you are there. Shows like SVU and CSI will look unlike anything you have seen before, and I had an HD set before. Not sure of the technology behind it, but you will not be disappointed. Sports are fantastic as well.

I spent $660 for this set, and it was well worth it. My next LCD will also be an LG!
(January 02, 2010)

Fantastic TV that doesn't let you down.

I purchased this TV during a great sale offer for $780.00 + free shipping. It was delivered early too! I was hesitant to buy a TV on line, so I went to 3 different stores to see it in person. It was beautiful in the stores, but I know there are ways they can fool you to think one TV is better than another. Plus it was at least $899.00.

When it arrived it took only 20 minutes to set up. Simply cut the ties, lift the top box off, remove the stickers, screw in 4 screws to the base, and plug in your cables. That easy. I had no issues with the sound like in other reviews. That issue seemed to be only with one set of shipments around September 09' from the manufacturer, and was a simple factory setting that can be changed quite easily (check earlier reviews for the fix). The picture takes a little tweaking to get to your liking, but the factory settings are a great start. Also there are settings on line if you look up the model number on Google.

Don't even think about buying this TV without HDMI cables though. AVI cables just ruin what you spent all the money for in my opinion. The difference was night and day. I never had used or seen a picture through HDMI, and the first day I wasn't even using them properly due to my lack of knowledge on how to set up the inputs. When I did figure it out it blew me away at the difference in movies and cable TV. The picture on the HD channels you get without cable service is brilliant, clear, and almost like being there in person. I think I'll spend the 10 per month extra from Time Warner Cable and get all the HD channels. Worth it in my opinion. The clarity is better than the other sets I compared in stores at the same price.

I have contemplated for years buying a LCD TV and I'm glad I waited. Now this technology is almost top of the line (minus the 240 Hz refresh which is not needed until 47" and above in my opinion) and for a much more reasonable price than the big name competitors like Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic. The blacks are not as deep as Samsung, but that is the only feature not as good for Samsung only. Beets the pants off the other before mentioned brands. I feel the price and the rest of the "better" features make up for that one shortcoming. Plus, if deep blacks are your desire you should really think about a Plasma.

The sound is great in my opinion. I'm half deaf and unable to really give a good sound comparison/review, but I can say that a feature that allows you to turn up the voice audibles higher than the background audibles is invaluable for someone with my hearing problems. The sound goes up to 100, and with this feature fine tuned I use 15 for TV and 25 for movies. For the first time I can hear every word spoken in the movie/program. Before I always had to guess as to what was being said, turn the TV up to a level that bothered the neighbors, or relied on lip reading. Finally no more loosing the plot or getting frustrated and giving up on a movie.

Do yourself a favor and look into this TV. For the price I feel you can only get substandard brands, or a "name brand" at a smaller size if you go another route. I have nothing but positive things to say about this TV, and I have no buyers remorse. That is unusual for me when buying something with this type of price tag. I usually kick myself when spending this kind of money, but now I'm only kicking myself for waiting so long. I guess good things come to those with patience.

Happy shopping,

J Ratliff

Best Christmas gift for my husband!

First of all I was so scared to order something like this without seeing it. I read all the reviews and trusted Amazon. When it was delivered to my mother's as it was a gift the man offered to set it up. I was impressed. I bought the 42" and did not know if it would be the best size. It is perfect. The picture quality is outstanding and I love that the sound is so clear my husband doesn't have to turn it up so loud the neighbors can hear it. He LOVES this tv. I felt I got a good price on Amazon and with no tax or shipping it was great. I am sitting here watching it now. Great tv. Don't hesitate if you are thinking of a flat screen. LG has done a superior job with this!
(January 09, 2010)

probably had the lip-sync fix but the problem persists

I bought this on Amazon in late December of 2009 so it probably had the lip-sync fix but the problem persists. For me the sound is a little behind the video. People close their mouths before you hear the last quarter of the last word they spoke. It's very close but it looks terrible if it's even a little off. Everybody who watched it commented. I tried to fix it by connecting the digital optical out from the LG to my receiver but that did not work. I finally fixed it by connecting the cable box optical out directly to the receiver.
(January 17, 2010)

Great Picture, Too Many Settings

Firstly, the display quality on this television is excellent. I am running cable TV through it, along with a Wii on component cables and an Xbox 360 on HDMI. Everything looks great... after you spend hours messing with the settings! For example, your brightness on Game Mode with component cables can be different than Cinema Mode with HDMI. While it's good to have those options, if you multiply all of the settings for each mode, then multiply that with each input, you literally end up with hundreds of settings to change before you can sit back and enjoy it! You can make things easy by relying on the Intelligent Sensor, but, in my experience, it always makes the picture very dark. Ultimately, once everything is set your way, the picture is beautiful! Another plus is the low weight - One person can carry it once it's out of the box.
(January 17, 2010)

Amazing!

I absolutely LOVE this tv! Everything about it is amazing. My boyfriend has a Sony, which I thought was one of the best, but the LG is far better! Its so easy to set up, has great sound, and the picture can't be beat. BEST TV EVER!
(January 18, 2010)

Great LCD TV

I'm not a big TV fan, but my wife is so after a lot of price/quality comparisons and research I got her the LG 42LH40. The only other LCD HD tv I have bought is a Samsung and I have been sold on that brand. After comparisons the LG picture is as good as the Samsung's. Colors and options are fine. I found that on line Black Friday sales after Thanksgiving probably are the best times to buy TVs.
After you search and find the best price, always remember that Amazon and its affiliates is one of the safest ways to order online. I always use Amazon if possible.

Beautiful LG TV for a great price

This TV is exactly as advertised. The picture and sound quality are adequate and exactly as I expected. It is a great TV with an excellent price!
(January 21, 2010)

Pleasing to the eye everyday, impressive quality

I have had this display for two months now and I am still loving it. We are in a pretty good time for HDTVs, especially with LCDs compared to recent years. The TV was easy to set up physically and to display with cable (and later PC from HDMI). The picture quality with Game or Cinema (modified a bit) are great, to me it's bringing out the best of LCD without breaking the bank, still having good blacks and motion quality that similarly-priced plasmas boast. It is great for Blu-Ray, or for streaming video (i.e. masks deficiencies, makes it look better). To me, when motion blur is noticeable it is the source, sports highlights from previous games is terrible, live sports are fine (like this college basketball game). Whatever they do to HD movies usually also can cause issues, while shows shot by HBO, AMC, etc. such as Curb look fine.

LG is an interesting brand, above the bargain levels but without a large price premium. I did not have to settle for 60 Hz, 3 HDMI, etc. I haven't had any lip sync issues and it does take a bit to turn on but channel changing is fine. Also as you can see it is light for this size and does not get too hot, either. Nice glossy edge, not important to me but a nice touch and good for resale down the line, and YES this is actually a TV with adequate and even good sound, not at all tinny, though the speakers are hidden. It's certainly enough for comedies, Discovery Channel, news, etc.

I am very pleased and from CES and forecasting, it looks like 2010 might not be as substantial for bread and butter, mature TVs using CCFL lighting and not costing $1000 or more. CCFL is pretty well proven at this point, good models not on torch mode have what it takes to entertain. I almost pulled the trigger on a backlit-LED 40" for $300 more, but I bought the LG and I'm happy with that. And "Korean" vs "Japanese" is overblown as well. If I had to buy a TV again, I would make the same choice.
(January 23, 2010)

Great LCD

We purchased this LCD after much review and research of LG and other top brands. The picture is excellent, sound is great for an LCD, and the remote is very simple to use. Overall we are very pleased with the function and quality of this t.v.
(January 27, 2010)

Outstanding TV set!

This is without a doubt the finest Television set I have ever owned. Occasionally have noticed a slight audio hum from speakers, but when it does that it is barely noticeable. So far I am very satisfied with it.
(January 30, 2010)

Good, except for Lip Synch on 720p TV stations

This TV is very nice looking.
I haven't been able to fully assess its performance because I don't have digital cable (just "analog" basic cable) nor a Blu Ray. The 1080i channels are very nice. The SD channels are OK. Not sure if they are better than on my old 26" JVC analog TV or not. The main problem is 720p channels. Certain shows and commercials show very bad lip synching, i.e. sound does not match the lip movement. There is a significant delay and sudden acceleration. Even the picture shows jumpiness. But, it varies with shows on the same channel! So, I'm not clear if it is the TV or the cable, or the combination. I should contact LG, but I haven't. I will reassess when I get a better TV service such as U-verse. I have Time Warner cable now in the South Bay, LA, CA for $21/mo.
(January 30, 2010)

LG 42LH40, not bad for a midlevel LCD

ill make this as brief as i can:

the picture quality is great especially on HD channels but when you start playing with xbox,ps3 etc. you will notice a slight blur which is somewhat annoying. as for the colors, I can honestly say, generally, Plasma TVs have a better color and contrast compared to LCD TVs (with video games).

I had a slight problem with the RF channel Input. To watch cable tv, i have to plug it in straight from a RF wall outlet. the tv worked great, for 3-4 minutes then the tv stations became static. YES ALL OF THEM. called LG about the problem and said that the MAIN Board was the culprit and will send someone to repair it.
the main board was replaced and VOILA, it works! had the TV on all day that day to make sure that it wont reproduce the problem again. for the people who are gonna buy this tv, i recommend to try all the connections in the back if possible. coz when the time comes for you to use some of the hook-ups in the back and its broken after the one year warranty, youre gonna be pissed off after.

overall, Im happy with the TV! decent size for a small-medium sized room. "invisible" speakers deliver great quality sound, surprisingly. For its price, you cannot go wrong with it.
(January 30, 2010)

Thanks!

This was my first HDTV and I am more than impressed with the quality and that's the reason for the title of this review.....simply "Thanks!". For this is a wake-up call for me (I'm 70) and I'm glad that I purchased it. The item itself is very nice-looking and the video is crisp and not washed out at all. I thank you again for a very nice product. I will purchase more in the future.
(January 30, 2010)

Great tv. Thumbs up

I ended up having to buy a nicer hdmi that was rated for 120hz for the blueray because the signal couldn't do the tv justice. cheaper cables work fine for HD tv because most tv broadcasts,If not all, are in1080i and not 1080p at the moment. I had to get a new blueray player too because my old magnovox was not capable of updating firmware(was stuck with the1.0 version) and looked terrible with the 120 hz. After it's all said and done, it's a beautiful thing.
(February 02, 2010)

works great....when it works

I purchased this unit on Nov 30 '09. Recieved it via Fed-Ex on Dec 5 09. By Dec 8 I was on the phone with LG, the screen was unwatchable due to "corrupted data" (in the words of the eventual repair tech). I finally got the unit repaired on Dec 31, LG took it's time sending repair parts to the service shop. The control unit in back of the panel (they call the screen a "panel") had gone bad. On Jan 8 I was back on the phone with LG, this time the left half of the screen was unwatchable, same problem. LG sent a replacement panel via slow boat from Asia. I finally got the unit repaired yesterday, the 2nd of Feb.
I have owned this TV for over 2 months, and have watched it for ony a few days. When it works, the picture is wonderful. When it doesn't work, it's a long slow wait for repair parts. In LG's favor, they have repaired this unit twice under warranty, in my home, no charge. However, I'm thinking the extended warranty may be a prudent purchase on my part.

Good TV - just turn off that TruMotion feature!

Bought the LG 42" on Black Friday weekend, got free shipping, had a timely delivery, everything was great. Picture looked great, sound great, so far, so good. I put in a Blu Ray disc - and all of a sudden I'm watching a Spanish soap opera. Huh? The picture looked like it was a live image - and this was THE GODFATHER PART II! I tried other discs and all of them had the same problem - even RATATOUILLE for crying out loud. I called tech support - and they were no help. The guy on the phone basically had me readjust the picture like the directions tell you to. I ended up asking a few flatscreen-owning friends about the issue. Finally, one of them answered my query by saying "Turn that TruMotion s**t off." He was right. Now the picture looks great, though the picture has recently been dim upon turning the unit on initially. I've resorted to turning the brightness up and I'm nervous that one of the bulbs might already be burned out. Oy vey. Anyway, it's a good TV for the price I paid, but I do feel like I didn't get a top of the line model. And LG - please hire better tech support people!

Awesome Christmas Gift

I was determined to give my husband a flat-screen TV for Christmas. I, however, know nothing about electronics. I looked through all the offerings on Amazon, and then checked Consumer Reports. Eventually, I zeroed in on this make/model because of the mountain of high reviews and the "best pick" status of it from Consumer Reports.

I ordered it and I can honestly say that it has been the biggest home-run of my Christmas shopping career! The package came in even before the expected delivery date, and the packaging was wonderful; not a problem there. I was able to hide it until Christmas.

The reviews were uniform in that this TV is very easy to set up, easy to configure, easy to use, with incredible picture and great sound. I have to say that this has been our experience as well. Even some "electronic geek" friends of ours have thumped me on the back and told me I did an outstanding job in my selection after viewing a movie or program on the TV. Even now, over a month after the holiday, my hubby will be watching something on it and pipe up, "Sweetie, I LOVE my Christmas present!" I enjoy watching it too. I am extremely glad I got this, as it has been a wonderful addition to the house. We love it.

Happier than I thought I'd be

I am very impressed with the picture quality of this TV, but I was expecting that. The sound quality and connectivity options impress me more. It is pretty quick to start up and silent to turn off (no "click" like many TVs). I am competely satisfied with this TV, and I am generally a very tough critic.
(February 11, 2010)

Life IS Good with is this TV

Love this TV. The TV has a very sleek look, it has a glossy black finish with a very cool clear border that goes all the way around the TV. The picture quality is outstanding. Colors are beautiful and the picture is very sharp, I can't notice any motion blur at all. I actually like the TruMotion, I keep it on low though. Black levels are pretty good if you're sitting at the center of the TV, but if you're off angle they get much lighter. Lighter scenes look very good off angle though. The Picture Wizard is awesome, saves you from having to buy some expensive home theater calibration disc. Sound is pretty good for TV speakers. I don't have any lip sync issues but my TV was manufactured in Feb 2010 so the problem was probably fixed. I was shocked at how recent the manufacture date was. This is probably the best 40"/42" 1080p 120hz LCD you can find for the money. I highly recommend it to anyone on a $1000 max budget.

LG 42" 120hz 1080p LCD TV

After much researching of 40" - 42" LCD TV's I found that the LG 42LH40 42-Inch 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV, Gloss Black was highly rated and was priced at Amazon.com very well. We have thoroughly enjoyed this set and are constantly amazed at it's picture quality; especially on HD channels. I wasn't expecting the sound to be as good as it is, so was pleasantly surprised. I would recommend this set to anyone.

Amazing TV

The LG 42LH40 is a amazing LCD TV. Great sound for a LCD tv and amazing video. Pair this up with a blu ray player and your in for a wonderful treat.

Picture is amazing with everything i throw at it like: Wii, Xbox 360, Blu Ray player, HD cable.

I love the amount of settings i can tweak. Also this is a IPS panel which are known to be the best and have the best viewing angles.

Buy Me!

I love my LG! I have to admit it took me a while to switch over from my RCA CRT dinosaur, but I wanted to make sure I got the right deal. Lo and behold Amazon came to the rescue! I have to admit that I'm no techie, but this TV had everything I was told I wanted and it hasn't disappointed! Set-up was as simple as it gets and picture was amazing. So amazing that my wife had remarked that the TV show we were watched looked like it was in the next room.

As I said, I love my LG! If you're on the fence about it, trust me, you want this TV.
(March 31, 2010)

Almost Five Stars

I will keep this very short and simple. I purchased this T.V. from an independent seller on Craig's List. I took it out of the box and it was more than easy to set up. I hooked up my blu-ray player and the picture quality was outstanding. The Verizon Fios HD (no I don't work for Verizon lol) was hooked up a couple of days later and YES there is a difference between Standard and HDTV.

There's not a lot to gripe about, but I have two minor complaints. You will need to purchase at least one HDMI cable (not supplied) if you want to connect it to a blu ray player/hd cable. The other minor issue is the sound. I'm a movie buff, so if you want that "Movie Theater" experience you are probably going to have to buy some type of surround sound system. The T.V volume by itself doesn't bring blu-ray movies to life. So because of the sound, I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars. Overall, great Flat Screen T.V. and I would recommend it.

(April 05, 2010)

Great TV

No problems. Menu navigation is particularly easy and self-explanatory. Sound quality isn't stellar, but no worse than any other TV I've used.
(April 15, 2010)

Freakin' awesome picture

This TV looks great, even though I'm not subscribed to
HD service. I get one channel off the air in HD and
it's incredible. 1080P is the bomb!

Set-up is a little fiddly and LG provides the
absolute worst user manual ever! It
tells you nearly nothing about what various
controls do and how to set them. This is
the only real CON I have with this TV.

The only real competition to my LG was a
Samsung that I was watching. It's price went
through the roof and it was smaller than the LG.
The LG's technical specs are impressive. If you
believe in looking that what the numbers say, this
is the TV for you. (although this model is no longer
available.)

Unpacking the TV was nearly painless. Mounting the
swivel stand was easy, but if you're a small person
you'll want help getting the TV from the floor to wherever
you're going to put it. I was just able to wrestle it
up to my 4 ft. high location. I'm a average sized guy
so judge for yourself. Just don't drop it!

If you're buying a new TV, do some research,
watch prices and know what you're buying before
you buy it.

great tv for the price

This was our first hdtv, and for the price I'm very happy with what we got. The only thing I would be critical on was the freight company who delievered it. It was 2 and a half hours after our schedualed appointment time, and the driver for pilot freight wasn't a pleasant person by any means.

But like I said we are very happy with the quality of this tv, and the price we paid for it. I would reccomend it.

Fantastic!

I could not be happier with this 42" LG LH40. I have had the TV for about a month and have used it exclusively with a (non-Blue Ray) DVD player hooked up through an HDMI cable.

- HDMI inputs on the back and side of the TV are convenient
- Gorgeous color and deep blacks. It was easy to setup using the color wizard
- Menu structure is attractive and intuitive, plus it is quick and easy to switch between components
- The sound can fill a room and does not get distorted at high volume
- The range of viewing angles on the TV are incredible

up and running

Easy to setup, turn on, connect, and everything else. I have had it on for 24/7 (due to room mates who work different shifts than I do, for sever months and not a bit of problem.

I would buy another if price was a bit lower.
